This was due to the materials they had available at the time, which was mostly dry wood which burned very nicely. As such, fires had to be put out as quickly as possible lest and entire village catch. Since candles were a common source of lighting, this presented an obvious problem, as the exposed flame could easily light any one of various forms of kindling and spread from there rapidly. To slocken is to extinguish a fire, a task needing to be accomplish with haste should a uncontrolled flame arise. While these days, we often take possessions such as clothing for granted, back then, old clothing had to be patched to last as long as possible, and since the poor classes had to work tirelessly during the day to earn enough to feed themselves, they would do these repairs at night by candle light. It just so happens that a box of thread and cloth scraps makes excellent kindling to start a fire, should the candle happen to tip into it. As fire needs oxygen to thrive, the fastest way to put it out, or slocken the fire, is to slam the lid of the box shut, closing the access to air the fire needs.
