OpenRA - cross platform engine for early Command & Conquer games

Recommended Posts

OpenRA is an Open Source reimplentation of Red Alert and Tiberian Dawn written in C# using the Tao Framework which allows cross-platform programming for Windows, Mac and Linux. At first game start it automatically downloads the now Freeware original game files.

The UI is modernised and has been tidied up reminding of new Command and Conquer titles. For example it is possible to queue build orders and the menu uses tabs. There exists internet network play having a game lobby. As the game features it's own map editor there are many custom maps available.

It also features fog of war and Oil Derricks to capture. To balance the game the allied artillery is stronger and has wider range. The soviets got a flak truck which can also shoot at ground targets. The jeep can now transport one person. Infrantry can not simple be knocked over by light tanks giving them more usefulness in the late game. Graphics have been updated: tanks and harvesters now don't simply explode when killed, they break apart in pieces. Defence structures also show it range radius when being placed.

It is easy to create own mods in the YAML scripting language. In fact both Red Alert and Tiberian Dawn are implemented as modifications of the game engine. A Dune 2000 modification is currently being worked on (it uses a very similar engine).
