Are MechCommander 1 & 2 officially freeware?

MechCommander 1 (now called MechCommander Gold when combined with their only expansion pack) has a full download at some gaming websites (i.e. shacknews, atomicgamer) and so is MechCommander 2. The main MechCommander website (that I know of) is gone for good.

 

Question is, were they officially freeware and still are today? I looked at their Wikipedia pages and found no clue for that with the exception of a partial source code giveaway from Microsoft for only MechCommander 2.

 

Edit: Came across this other official website: http://mechcommander.co.uk/index/, and it has the official downloads there too.

Has anyone managed to fix a fast scrolling rate issue? (a fast PC leads to that)

Has anyone managed to fix the game fully maximized without a slow mouse working under Windows XP and above versions? Running the game under a window worked fine smoothly with the mouse.

 

I know someone has managed to bring in a hi-res patch for Mech Commander 1 (and its Gold version), but so far no sign of an update there:

I wish either Nyerguds, Dynasty, AlexB or Hifi could do that.
