Ask a Developer Interview with Art Director Chris Tamburrino

Recommended Posts

After a week's delay, the first instalment of Ask a Developer has arrived, and Art Director Chris Tamburrino is the first of the Victory Games' developers to answer the fan-submitted questions. Included with the questions are many new concept images of units and environments. Here's part of the interview and some of the new art....

Q. What are the influences behind the designs for each faction?

Our main goal for the design for each faction was to create 3 unique looks that would allow players to quickly distinguish them on the battlefield. It was also important that their respective looks be indicative of the play styles for each faction.

Q. What kinds of different hi-end graphical effects are we going to see besides physics?

We’re aiming to take full advantage of Frostbite’s capabilities where it makes sense for an RTS, so our focus is on dynamic effects that will bring the environment to life while keeping the action readable. Expect to see high-quality ambient occlusion (HBAO), wind effects for vegetation, reflections, and a diverse range of weapon and destruction effects.

Q. What kind of custom graphic skins will be available for purchase?

Here’s a sneak peak at one of the custom EU skins we are working on. The tank on the left is the basic EU version and the one on the right is an urban camo version.

not directly related to this. just want to say nice new avatar Sonic, year of the sanke i guess??

though i am anxious to know how the business model actually going to be handle? from the look of this game, it seems that it probably gonna cost a lot to develop, I am not convinced that they are going to make much money with custom skin or similar things like that. From my experience, if a game is truly based on a free2play model, but the auidances are still the intended customers, then the whole thing would already fail before taking flight... the only true free2play games are the one that makes money off from ads, for example. so thats my view.
