Lag in CnC gold and Red Alert

Recommended Posts

I recently bought the Ultimate collection during a sale and planned to go through all of the games canonically. Problem is that ontop of the old interface(stuff like no unit queing) the game speed(framerate?) is really inconsistent and seems to tank alot, especially when the sidebar is open and stuff is training or building (I've already set the game-speed higher in the options menu).

Really not sure what is causing the problem, thus far the only modifications I've made to the games was to install the "fixed launchers" from bibber's site, but this problem was around before that too.

Anybody have an idea what could fix this?

Playing on Vista 32bit, old laptop.

2.2 duo

8600 gt

3gb of ram

First post here btw, nice to see there is still an active communitty for this awesome franchise.

In order to use version 1.06c by Nyerguds on The Ultimate Collection you need to disable compatibility mode for all users on C&C95.exe or else it will crash.

For RA1 you could download this: http://funkyfr3sh.cncnet.org it can patch any install of RA or just download the entire game as RA is free. (as is C&C1 and TS)

Thanks for the advice. Sorry for the noob questions, but how do I disable it?

Is it as easy as checking boxes under properties/compatibility or do I have to mess with the registry to do it? (never done that before).

At the bottom of the compatibility menu you will see a button that says "change settings for all users"

It says "show settings for all users". But There isn't clear disable option unless ticking the following is the way to go:

Disable visual themes

Disable desktop composition

Disable display scaling on high DPI settings

Click on "show settings for all users" then you should get a new window where you can uncheck the "run in compatibility mode for" option.

Ahh I see. That was never checked to begin with. The default is windows xp service pack 2, but it's unchecked and grayed-out. I did tick the boxes disabling the options described in my previous post in addition to running the ccconfig application that came with the patch.

Thanks for the help, along with this thread I found a post by Nyerguds (http://forums.cncnz.com/topic/13910-106c-development-topic/page-36)

Some of the resolutions turned the game into a buggy square in the top-left, but 800x600 seems to work. I think I've pretty much gotten the patch to work now, still abit of buggyness with the In-game movies slowing down, but the game itself runs much smoother now.

That happens when you set the resolution higher than the size of the map itself, going to the options menu fixes that issue somewhat.

As for laggy movies there's an option in ddraw.ini that might fix that. Open ddraw.ini with a text editor and change singlecpu=true to singlecpu=false

If you'd just read the FAQ that comes with the patch , you'd see that simply opening and closing the main menu solves this problem. Not to mention, since missions get larger as you progress through the campaign, the problem is gone after mission 3 anyway.

Ummm forgiveness prease? The square thing wasn't the only issue, mouse acceleration was totally out of whack, making it hard to click anything.

I was also on GDI mission 9 when I was testing this yesterday.

Sorry if my last post bugged you, I never intended to imply I was dissatisfied with the patch, I'm actually pretty happy that I can play the game at a solid framerate now. So yeah, thanks for making it possible :)

Sorry. I've gotten far too many people saying "omg weird double screen stuff happening in high res", while I can't help but wonder how they didn't notice it disappearing when they inevitably opened the main menu to exit the game to come and complain about it -_-

One known cause for actual lag ingame are trees on the map, by the way. For some reason, 'Terrain'-class objects like trees (and some rocks in Desert theater) severely slow down the game, especially since they are sometimes placed down in rather dense forests. I think it's because the game treats them as constantly animating, or something, despite none of them besides the tiberium tree having more than one frame normally.

As for the mouse issues, though, no idea. That may be CnC-DDraw related or something though; it has mouse sensitivity adjustment options. Though those are normally irrelevant if the game screen isn't scaled to a custom resolution. I don't think it has any effect on normal changing of the game resolution itself.
