Questions About Solid State Hard Drives

Recommended Posts

I've been thinking about adding a Solid State hard drive to my current system. I considered a big upgrade of all major components but since I don't play games on PC any more I think it would be a waste of money. But I would like to improve performance so a Solid State hard drive should be great.

I'm looking at the Samsung 840 Evo Series MZ-7TE120BW Solid State Drive, 2.5", 120GB - https://www.ascent.co.nz/productspecification.aspx?ItemID=417348

The plan it to set this up as the primary drive, installing Windows 8.1 on it, my current Western Digital 640 GB hard drive will become secondary drive for storage.

The only part that concerns me is the interface for the SSD. The drive it self says its "SATA 6 Gb/s", the specifications for my motherboard says I have "6 xSATA 3 Gb/s ports". Does that mean I can't use this Samsung SSD with my motherboard?

All of the brand and types of Solid State hard drives I see available are all "SATA 6 Gb/s". So I'm kind of confused.

Current system:

  • CPU: Intel E8400 Core 2 Duo @ 3.0 GHz
  • Motherboard: ASUS P5QL-E
  • RAM: 4 GB GSkill DDR2800 Dual Channel
  • Video Card: Gigabyte GeForce GTX 650 Ti
  • HDD: Western Digital 640 GB SATA2 & External eSATA Seagate Barracuda 320GB SATA2
  • ODD: LG DVD/RW with Lightscribe
  • PSU: 500w Silverstone
  • Display: ViewSonic VA2448/m 24" LED LCD (1920 x 1080 Widescreen)
  • OS: Windows 7 Home Premium x64 SP1

Well according to this source: http://www.lifehacker.com.au/2014/02/the-complete-guide-to-solid-state-drives-2 ,

your motherboard supports SATA II @ 3.0 Gbps. There are three versions of SATA and the SSD you mentioned to buy is using SATA III @ 6.0 Gbps.

Sure that SSD will work on your PC, but at a reduced performance based on your motherboard using SATA II, not SATA III.
