My DVD-Rom

Recommended Posts

Currently, my computer got some problems. But, the most annoying one is that my DVD room often hangs up whenever it reads DVD, but still runs ok for CD.

I set my LiteOn 16X DVD-rom as slave on the Secondary IDE, and I set my LiteOn CDRW-rom as master on the Secondary IDE. While on the Primary IDE, I only set my Seagate 40 Gb as master.

I've been testing my DVD room many times last night. I have tried to set it as master but still my DVD-rom somehow dropped, so it hangs whenever I try to play DVD. I also have reinstall the driver but the result is still the same.

I really need some help about this. At the moment, I think the problem is located in the DVD-rom itself, but I don't know how to fix this. And, my DVD-rom is 2 months old since I replaced the old samsung DVD.

The DVD Drive that came with my computer is knackered too - just doesn't read stuff, I almost got my brand new Franz Ferdinand album stuck in it before I'd even had a listen :(

If your drive is only 2 months old J-Fire; just send it back for a replacement.

Could be your DMA/PIO settings for your IDE controllers. For DVD or DVD Writer drives you should have them set to DMA mode. By default Windows XP sets all DVD/CD based drives to DMA mode anyway. But I've seen systems where they are set to the older/slower PIO mode before so it never hurts to check.

You can check this by opening your Device Manager. Expand the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers category. Right click on Seconary IDE Channel and select Properties. Now proceed to the Advanced Settings tab. Look at Device 0 (first optical drive/your D: drive) and Device 1 (second optical drive/your E: drive), change the Transfer Mode to DMA if available if they are set on PIO Only. Screen shot below.....

You may need to reboot Windows after making these changes.

If this doesn't solve the problem then check out your DVD Rom drive manufactures web site, there may be solutions you can try there.

I've already tried that, but it's not working. My dvd drive can only reads dvd for some secons and the hangs up. This really annoys me, since I have just bought some dvd games, and I can't play them. Thanks for your advice tough, Sonic.

Looks like I got to replace it if I have no other choice but it will take a week for replacement. And chickendippers, I know how you feel about, at least someone got the same fate as mine :)
