Oh Help!

Recommended Posts

I curse XP! As I write this I'm in internet explorer viewing the site in 16 colour and 640 x 480 Resolution.

about 6 hours ago, my computer just degraded from fully working into a useless piece of crap. One of my games showed problems at first with the Keyboard jumbling up, then the computer's speed dragging to a crawl. I ran a spyware check and somehow got over 250 in less than 24 hours, to make matters worse I knew that this meant one thing.. A trojan horse had been executed and was running riot on my system.

I started the virus checker and started checking, before I knew it the checker crashed and my mouse pointer was becoming non-responsive. I reset the machine only to find that upon return, everything seemed fine, but I was wrong, windows would not detect any files on the system, so virus checking was impossible... then came the news I didn't wanna see. All primary windows files were corrupt!!

I reinstalled the antivirus software in any way possible, So decided to go into safe mode to deal with the problem, but was only met with continuous system resets... Windows was doomed to a shell, the Virus which I had, had run rampage, and won.

I am back on with non essential windows files still corrupted. I would say forget it, but I need to find a way to backup the most important files on DVD. But the damage is so bad, I can't even start up Nero let alone firefox... I just get an error message saying that none of the files can be found...I'm only here cos I used a XP window to access the net...

Any ideas how I can get round the constant errors of windows to access programs so I can back up and then format the drive?

It was a nasty one, but I'm back-up and running again in true King style!

I managed to bypass the error that was preventing me loading any programs and backed up what I needed.

Turned out it was a very nasty virus in the boot sector. No aparent damage, but how the hell it got past my scans and monitor protection is beyond me, all I know is that it struck hard and fast, and now it's gone! :D

Thank god for Norton Ghost, I could have been loading up everything for ages.

It was probably an unknown virus, so that's why it could slip through the system so easily.

What antivirus program are you using and how up to date is it?

Just AVG and it was 100% up to date. I've used programs like Norton, McAfee (made just 8 miles from my home town) and whatnot, but cannot get along with them and have had many infections with them in the past.. AVG has served me well for many years and this is the first time it failed to do its job.

Due to the nature of the virus, I didn't manage to get everything backed up. I needed 3 DVDs of backups, I only got one. Due to the nature of the virus attacks, I didn't know how much damage it would do, so didn't wanna hang about and find out since the system was been torn apart at a rapid rate.

I dunno what I have in terms of important file info, hell I dunno if I managed to backup all the doumentation and work I did for C&C 10. Once I found what I've got on my DVD I can work towards picking up the pieces.

Sonic I'll probably need all access information for all things ranging from my e-mails to FTP, I'll e-mail you in due course to tell you what I need.

Didn't he juz said Norton?

Nope I said Norton Ghost, which safely formats a hard drive and reinstalls all the basic files I need to get started again, which means I didn't have to spend hours reinstalling drivers for my graphics card and such.

Main reason why I got everything on D: and C: is just windows itself.

Nope I said Norton Ghost

Isn't that the same?

It still is Norton right?

Norton AntiVirus and Norton Ghost and very different problem. Ghost is a backup and restore program, it basically takes a snap shot of your hard drive, when problems like C&C King's happen you simply restore the hard drive to good working condition using Norton Ghost.

Someone who uses Norton Ghost alot could probably explain it better than me, I've used it or any program like it before.
