Red alert 1 lan problems

Recommended Posts

Guest muntja

Hey, just found this site today and I looked threw, but none of the other red alert lan problems seemed to be exactly the same, so here goes, please help if you can.

Just set up a network today, wanted to play old school red alert (and doom, really old school) so i set up the cards, got the switch, I can now see the other computers and even share files (wow). On top of that, doom does work over my network. Here's the problem

I open up red alert on both computers, in the network area computer 1 can see both himself and the other computer, however computer 2 can only see himself. Then when comp. 2 tries to set up a new game, it leaves the lobby and comp1 cannot see him. So basically, comp1 can see a both computers, comp2 can only see itself, and if comp1 or 2 stars up the game, it seems like they left and i cannot enter the dang game.

Here's some information

Both are running different verisons of win98

Both are running red alert 3.03

I have ixp or ipx or whatever it is on both of them

net bios is enabled

I am frusterated

Again, i can get doom to work, and i can even see the other computer on it sometimes, but i can't join any games cause they don't show up. Anyhelp is GREATly needed, thank you very much you guys.

have you checked the IPX settings on both computers.

make sure the ipx frame type is set to either 802.3 or Ethernet II on both computers. Also make sure that the Internal Network Number and Network Number are both set to 00000000 on both computers

try that and see if RedAlert works on network

i will need the specs of both systems, and the OS's on each. It seems like a network problem, but i can't be sure. i am assuming your running both IPX (use just 802.3) and TCP/ip with IP address staticly set. i could be because one machine has windows 98 SE and the other just has straight 98. either way there is a mismatch between the systems. Maybe computer 1 has 98se thats why it can see comp 2 (98) but comp2 cant see 98 se. just post the hardware and software so i can help you further

Windows 98se has the service pack installed where has 98 dosen't. There have been network and IPX updates so i think maybe there is a mismatch between the IPX versions hence thats why only one computer can see both computers.

the updates can be found here

http://www.microsoft.com/windows98/downloads/corporate.asp

First download and install the system update on the windows 98(not se) machine, it can be found here

http://www.microsoft.com/windows98/downloads/

contents/WURecommended/systemupdate/Default.asp://http://www.microsoft.com/windows98/...ate/Default.asp://http://www.microsoft.com/windows98/...ate/Default.asp

Then download all the Critical Updates and install them on both systems, there is some that target IPX issues so this could possibly fix your problem (they are in the first url under Critical Updates heading), and don't bother downloading the Windows IDE Hard Drive Cache Package

there is no need

after you have both system with the updates installed, try the game and it should work, if not let me know

I had a problem like that with tiberian sun. I had to download files to update the game. Maybe you should try doing that on red alert internet site. :D
