EuroGamer Review C&C 3

Recommended Posts

Here they come, the reviews of Command & Conquer 3 have started to roll in. First up is one from EuroGamer, who gave C&C 3 a very respectable 8/10.

While it's never going to leave a footprint on the history of RTS like its early ancestors did, I'm really hesitant to call C&C3's simplicity and dumbness a bad thing. It's simple and dumb because it wants to be, and has clearly worked very hard to be pretty watertight about it. While there's a certain obnoxiousness in its total refusal to innovate, in a lot of ways it's exactly the right real-time strategy game at exactly the right time. After years in the wilderness, RTS is pretty cool again right now, and something as cheerfully straightforward as this is just what's needed to stop the big braininess of Company of Heroes and Supreme Commander leading to another plunge into an inaccessibility that turns more casual players off the whole genre. On its own, it wouldn't work, but as an alternative, even a companion piece, to those it's a gentle success. This is the ying to their yang, the Question of Sport to their Have I Got News For You - it's pure trash, and it suits Command & Conquer through-and-through. Really, it has no right to try and be anything else, and it's because it knows this that it works so well.

Sorry for the late response, still browsing through the news... having finished with the SP missions on hard and not normal, I can see where the reviewer is coming from.

It seems an ironic or should I say moronic contradiction to give the game a respectable score of 8/10 and practically spend the whole article talking about how 'dumb' the mechanics is.

I guess if you take out all the male posturing that usually happens when someone makes fun of your pet project - there is an element of truth to what he says.... well if you can interchange dumb with simple anyway.

Cut scenes... I guess it's always going to be "luv or hate" kinda relationship. But I think the producers have proven the point - the FP FMV works very well in computer games and should be done more.

Most of the missions weren't constructed that well. There was really only one GDI mission that I thought "now this is fun"... I don't remember the name (I'll have to research it again - because I'm sure I'll be refering to it in the future) but the small gdi base where you have to cycle the power between a variety of base defences then bring a mcv through enemy held territory. That was a C&C map of old!

so the comments about circle your troops with a box and right click the enemy... rang true in a sense for me.
