Woofna 0 Posted April 29, 2007 Just curious ... does anyone else here fold? All my old computers, when they are replaced, go to my "graveyard" and run 24/7 in my room folding. Currently, there's two Pentium 3 machines and one Pentium 4 machine folding, and of course my new machine (Athlon x2 5200+ 2.6ghz, 2gb RAM, GeForce 8800GTS) that I built a week ago is folding with both cores whenever it's on, which is most of the time. I fold for overclock.net's team. Does CNCNZ have a team? Should we? Share this post Link to post
F15pilotX 4 Posted April 29, 2007 folding=? I couldn't understand the wiki definition Share this post Link to post
Woofna 0 Posted April 29, 2007 Wikipedia has no definition on it. Folding = http://folding.stanford.edu/ Share this post Link to post
Luk3us 63 Posted April 29, 2007 Oh its one of those things... No I don't help out on those, not because I don't care, but because my computer can be put to better use, such as playing games as opposed to helping some random disease. Share this post Link to post
Woofna 0 Posted April 29, 2007 The folding client I uses whatever of your CPU is not being used. It's always on (The folding client) whether I am gaming, on the internet, typing, or leaving the computer on to play music or download, or if my comp's doing nothing. It doesn't slow me down at all. If I am using 89% of my CPU gaming, it uses the other 11%. If I am using 12% of my CPU on the internet, then it uses the other 88%. It just picks up the slack. Even on this old 512mb P4 Dell I'm using right now, my folding client NEVER slows me down a bit. Can't wait for my new AMD machine to arrive. =D Share this post Link to post
Mighty BOB! 5 Posted April 29, 2007 I was thinking about folding, but it turns out my computer is almost always doing something.. so I ended up not.. Share this post Link to post
Sonic 296 Posted April 29, 2007 Its basically the same thing as SETI@Home. I see no real advantage to have these things running. Share this post Link to post
Mighty BOB! 5 Posted April 29, 2007 The advantage is speed. They can complete in months what might usually take 3 years with just the institution's resources. Share this post Link to post
mormreed 0 Posted April 29, 2007 so what does folding do? does it just act like a big computer doing calculations? Share this post Link to post
F15pilotX 4 Posted April 29, 2007 I might do it.... the only thing i don't understand is, aren't all the pcs doing the same thing, except some faster than others, or is each solving a different thing? (i.e. are they internet-updated) Share this post Link to post
mormreed 0 Posted April 30, 2007 from what I read I got that all the PCs are linked together to do big equations except instead of building one big supercomputer they use a bunch of smaller computers to make a "pimped out rig" Share this post Link to post
sith_wampa 6 Posted May 1, 2007 Communism is infecting the internet! These guys want the PEOPLE to give THEIR CPU to act as a supercomputer just because they are too poor to make their own? COMMIES I SAY!!! Share this post Link to post
sith_wampa 6 Posted May 1, 2007 Kidding? Just think about it for a minute. It may sound weird, but it is true, there is a good deal of socialist ideology in all of this. Share this post Link to post
F15pilotX 4 Posted May 2, 2007 no, they're trying to help find cures for diseases  Share this post Link to post
blodnukl 0 Posted May 5, 2007 Did they miss the part where people buy extra RAM to make their computers do more? Share this post Link to post
