vyper 0 Posted May 19, 2007 sometimes i find the dune universe to be a parody of the desert culture of the arabs......its full of these odd references to the arabian culture which make you laugh sometimes and wonder what was the guy thinking when he wrote this....... for instance when he calls the fremen the 'fedayeen' ( literally means 'willing to sacrifice his life' but in the modern sense is used to describe suicide bombers) and when westwood described the telaxue as engaged in a 'jihad', it all made me LOL. There are alot of other references to eastern culture in many things which makes us people laugh when we hear them..... for instance the word 'firangi' (in star trek) was the term that our forefathers used to describe the british colonialist invaders ( literally means 'white skinned'). there r many other examples that probably sound 'exotic' but actually make us ppl really laugh when we see them used in such ways.
