anyone read this book?

I just started reading the book dune and i was wondering how you guys and gals thimk of it

 

PS i am still really close to the beginning and I am already hooked on it

Way ahead of you. ;p I read Dune AGES ago. Read most of the others too. Need to finish The Battle of Corrin.

I'm half way through it honest..... bad school flashback there :haha: .....

 

I don't have the attention span to read long novels.

I saw the movie, and have played 4 Dune games. So I don't really want to read the novel. :P

sometimes i find the dune universe to be a parody of the desert culture of the arabs......its full of these odd references to the arabian culture which make you laugh sometimes and wonder what was the guy thinking when he wrote this....... for instance when he calls the fremen the 'fedayeen' ( literally means 'willing to sacrifice his life' but in the modern sense is used to describe suicide bombers) and when westwood described the telaxue as engaged in a 'jihad', it all made me LOL. There are alot of other references to eastern culture in many things which makes us people laugh when we hear them..... for instance the word 'firangi' (in star trek) was the term that our forefathers used to describe the british colonialist invaders ( literally means 'white skinned'). there r many other examples that probably sound 'exotic' but actually make us ppl really laugh when we see them used in such ways.
