Sonic 297 Posted June 19, 2007 Chronojam has posted the latest Red Alert: A Path Beyond developer blog. This update discusses the new maps and map list, the addition of binoculars for Officers and the Spy, a look at the new sniper scopes, a short preview of the new Allied technology like the the Mobile Radar Jammer and Phase Tank, and a summary of the improvements to be made to the Tesla Coil.... It's big and mean, but it is a bit outdated and tricky to place on your maps. Sir Phoenixx is making up a new one that hopefully can make it into Beta, and hopefully we can show it off sometime in the near future. The Coil's getting a few changes made to it in terms of its actual firing as well. I've put together a new, slightly more terrifying discharge sound of course, no more annoying buzzing for this tower of doom. But the really impressive stuff in this department isn't ready yet; Neosaber is working on some brand new AI for the Coil that will give it, shall we say, situational awareness. The Coil will be allowed to peek around its surroundings to spot approaching Allies and better prioritize its targets; in the end it will likely be able to coordinate with other towers as well, but who knows at this point. We'll have to see how things work out. Click here to read the full blog. Share this post Link to post
Gben 20 Posted June 20, 2007 I just started playing this again... it's always a laugh in the first couple of minutes while I wait to see a big crowd of team players heading of in one direction or another... how else will I work out where the bad guys are?!? I'm guess this a noob problem - because of the fantasticly open map design - the enemy base is never in a clear direction unlike the vanilla renegade maps. Maybe a noob arrow pointing to enemy base on map would be good until you progress through the first rank or something... Anyway I'm looking forward to the next release. -gben Share this post Link to post
Sonic 297 Posted June 20, 2007 Yeah some of the maps are huge, but just think how cool it would be with 20 or 30 players in the game. Share this post Link to post
TheBlackOut 7 Posted June 22, 2007 Yeah some of the maps are huge, but just think how cool it would be with 20 or 30 players in the game. Some of the maps are too big for that though. When I go on sometimes there is around 15-25 people on and it's still not much going on and hard to cordinate attacks or get a defense going if everyone is in a different area. I ran a small server with deathmatch style maps... It was fun! Small, but not that small! 4 players in is fun. When I had more it was even MORE fun! Share this post Link to post
Gben 20 Posted June 22, 2007 When I played last night we had 20+ players. So it *was* fun, we were playing on another map in the rotation that I hadn't played before, so still spent most of the game trying to work out where anything was. Apparently we had 10 Koreans all decide to play last night or something - which boosted the numbers up. I noticed one of the regulars mention that he hardly recognised anybody. When you consider that I haven't played in months, but I'm still ranked in the 300s out 5000 - well it's a fair indication of how unknown it is. But based on their recent podcast, it looks like they're attempting to boost the publicity side. Still the game engine is smaller, faster and gameplay is better and being a standalone program - what more could you ask for? -gben Share this post Link to post
Chronojam 3 Posted June 22, 2007 Yeah, each morning at work I check the main server, generally there's 20+ people on. Lately about 300+ Koreans (no kidding!!) decided they wanted to play, which is pretty cool. You can see them in sometime, they use the [KOR] tags of course XD Regarding the maps... If the maps are too small and cramped, it's hard to sneak around and avoid mines and the like. You slash the tactics and make it a straight-up slugfest. You need to have wide open spaces to benefit from the range differences and speed differences on the units, and need to have options for where to drive your a-bomb hauling Demo Truck. Generally with 25 people, there's always something going on. If there isn't, step up and get your team to work together. The next version's going to change a lot, but teamplay isn't going away; it's getting more important, as a lot of the battles you fight will depend on units covering for each other's weaknesses. Light tanks will beat Tesla Tanks 1v1 or 2v2, but Tesla Tanks beat Light Tanks 3v3 or 4v4. We've got some very interesting balance worked out. The Koreans are going to likely host a Pacific-based server so people on the other side of the world can get better pings, by the way. Share this post Link to post

Just run around. Which I do like if you plan to not stay for a long time... I would look into buying a server (if you read this, PM me onto how I could do ths for APB) and hosting it. But I was hosting it on my home connection and it was fun with just 4 people. Though I'd think I'd limit it to around 20 or so. You guys need more of those maps. I like the one were the building is partfully underground and a little area outsie and 2 floors to it. And Koreans you say? Can they at least speak English? Share this post Link to post
F15pilotX 4 Posted June 23, 2007 Chronojam's right, it's great because you can actually use strategy instead of who has the bigger guns....by the way, I was on there the other day with around 35-40 players, and THAT, my friend, is FUN Especially cool is that there was about as much lag as a normal ren server even with that many people on Share this post Link to post
Gben 20 Posted June 25, 2007 Yeah I like what they've done, but it would make the game a whole lot more accessible if they considered the noob factor. So the tutorial SP map is a good idea, if they could simply script some chat commands when things were done... ie. "Technicians don't repair vehiciles" when someone tries to do so... or when you purchase a vehicle/unit, a few chat lines of "did you know..." could come up. Anyway I'm sure this has been discussed to death over at their forums. -gben Share this post Link to post
