Base blows up in Challenge

Recommended Posts

Guest Jito463

Well, I've contacted EA support and for now I'm just going to remove Zero Hour and reinstall without the 1.02 patch, but has anyone experienced this problem where when you start a Generals Challenge, about 1 minute into the game your entire base just blows up? I do run the game from an image of my original on a VD, however I also tried with the original CD to eliminate this as the source of the problem, and it did the same thing.

If anyone has any ideas, I'd appreciate it.

Nope, wasn't either. I finally got a response from EA Support:

Thank you for contacting me. We have seen this happen a lot with Windows 2000 and XP. We think we may have come up with a work around.

Try uninstalling both of the games completely, then before reinstalling delete the original game directory's and their DATA files in the My Documents folders.

After you have completed that, reinstall General's but do not patch it. Then Reinstall Zero Hour and patch normally. You can also try patching Generals up to 1.6. If this works please let me know, this is still being investigated.

Thank you for contacting Electronic Arts Online Support and please feel free to respond if any of the suggestions I made do not work,

Shouldn't EA be done investigating its own problems. They shouldn't be asking the users to test it. Thats what play testers and Tech support does.

Well, if anyone else experiences this problem, his suggestion did fix it. But you're right, if this happens "a lot in windows 2000 and XP", then they should have caught it during testing. Whatever. Just as long as it works.

Oh, this is really pissing me off now. It's doing it agiain, but now in Skirmish mode. And I don't have *ANY* mods installed. Not even maps! They'd better fix this bug real quick, or they're gonna get a demand for my money back.

Well, another update. Repair install fixed it (didn't have to uninstall/reinstall this time). Still making me mad, though.

Yes, those copyprotections are... :S  :(

Well if people didn't copy the game then they wouldn't have to put them on would they!

True, but I find it annoying when people who have the original CD can't play it, while people with warez versions do not have those problems (the copy protection has been stripped). What I find truly annoying in Generals/ZH is that the game requires the CD to be inserted. If you use a NoCD, then you can play the game without the CD, because the game doesn't actually get any files from it! It only needs the CD for the copy protection...

My advice: put stuff like movies, etc which are rarely used on the CD, instead of on my harddrive!

The only thing copyprotections do is prevent the casual copier from making copies for his buddies. Like "Billy Bob" making a copy for his neighbor "Billy Joe". The people who really make the money off selling fakes aren't hindered in any way by Safedisc and SecureROM and the like. And it makes it worse when the casual user who paid for the game has to suffer because of faulty copy protection schemes. It's bad and getting worse, and I don't see an end in sight....
