EA Wants Open Gaming Platform

Recommended Posts

Some interesting news here....

Rival gaming systems should make way for a single open platform, a senior executive at Electronic Arts has said.

Gerhard Florin said incompatible consoles made life harder for developers and consumers.

"We want an open, standard platform which is much easier than having five which are not compatible," said EA's head of international publishing.

He said the web and set-top boxes would grow in importance to the industry.

"We're platform agnostic and we definitely don't want to have one platform which is a walled garden," said Mr Florin.

EA currently produces games for more than 14 different gaming systems, including consoles, portable devices and PCs.

"I am not sure how long we will have dedicated consoles - but we could be talking up to 15 years," Mr Florin added.

He predicted that server-based games streamed to PCs or set-top boxes, would become increasingly important.

"You don't need an Xbox 360, PS3 or Wii - the consumer won't even realise the platform it is being played on."

Set-top boxes are becoming increasingly more powerful as they include technology to deal with High Definition TV streams and access to the internet.

I honestly can't see a single open platform for all games, not any time in the next decade that's for sure. As consumers its hard but is it really hard for developers?

It's because EA do not have the skilled developers to code for the Playstation 3. On every other platform, they can get the maximum FPS out of their games. But since you can't simply port games over to the PS3 (because the Cell Processor executes code differently), it gets right up EA's backside. The results are that over 50% of the time, EA titles on the PS3 will consistently stutter, and slowdown into sometimes single figure Frames per second.

This proves frustrating when you consider the price of a single Playstation 3 SDK is about $700,000, So you can imagine that EA has handed over several million dollars to Sony for many of these kits, and can't actually unlock the power and potential of the damn thing.

The truth is that everytime EA come out moaning publically, it's about a console, and it's usually more centred about the Playstation 3 being an extremely tough cookie to develop for. But now it's probably about labour costs, publishing costs, and extra development time. EA simply want to cut their budget, axe some jobs, so there's simply a PC and Console development team and that's it.... More money to buy out more companies.

Unfortunately for EA, this is the way business works. Multiple platforms, allowing people to have choice is called competition. This is something that EA don't have in their Dictionarys, since there's only a few phrases which circles the chief execs and that's "one world order", "Solitary software development Utopia", and "Monopoly". All I can say to them is....Welcome to the real world!

Ah, well, let them work it out. We can just get our consoles or emulators anyway.

They won't need to work it out, they can just read this:
