Debugger problem with Red Alert 2

Recommended Posts

Guest strat1

Hey, I just bought a legal copy of Red Alert 2 and wanted to install it. I put it into the CD drive, and when the little window popped up I hit the Install button. Then a little error box showed up saying:

A debugger has been detected. Please remove the debugger and try again.

I have tried many things... rebooting my comp with no background programs but systray and explorer; rebooting my comp with Norton Anti-Virus disabled; I have also tried to right click on the setup.exe and tried to go to some Compatibility option but I only have a General tab, there are no other tabs.

Remember, I'm having this problem installing the game. Any help is appreciated, thanks.

No I'm running Windows 98.

Then there will be no compatability mode if you are running 98 then.

I assume the problem is you are running a debugger? Have you installed one?

I don't even know what a debugger is :?

And I already tried all the things at the Microsoft page you listed, thanks though.

I have installed the Lite version of Kazaa and a few cracked C&C games before... but I've uninstalled/deleted all the cracked C&C games and don't have Kazaa running when I try to install RA2.

Remember, I'm having this debugger problem trying to install the game, not playing it.

Once again, any help is appreciated :)

Who knows what else was installed when you installed the cracked C&C games. So you must have had a ripped copy of RA2 installed then?

Something is conflicting with the setup of RA2. Download and install Spybot - Search & Destroy from http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php?page=download to check if there is any crap in your system. Do a full virus scan as well.

I was thinking of that as well, but I have also tried booting up my computer with no background programs running except for systray and explorer, and that debugger error still shows up.

I already have a Spy-ware scanner and destroyer, Ad-Aware. I did a spyware scan before the first time I installed RA2, and it still didn't work. I didn't try a virus scan though, I guess I'll try that tonight.

And yes, I did have a ripped copy of RA2 installed before (worked beautifully by the way), but I have since uninstalled it and deleted any remaining folders/files.

Thanks anyways.

You should go through the registery and make sure ALL files relating to your other RA2 are gone. :!:

Naughty boy for using cracked games......

8)

I "go through the registry" by going to Start>Run>regedit right?

Open the registry editor (Go to START -> RUN -> type regedit) and search for all references to RA2 and/or Red Alert 2, remove all these keys from the registry. Reboot the system.

Once rebooted try and install RA2. Download the RA2 v1.006 patch from http://www.cncnz.com/files/redalert2/patches.shtml

Install that patch. Now try your game.

Alright I went through the registry and deleted anything that had "ra2" in it and a few things that had to do with "Red Alert2." I left some things that had to do with Final Alert, because I don't think they affect this problem. I also deleted a few YR things, but not all of them.

So I rebooted, and popped in the CD. Tried to install it, and I still had the debugger problem.

So I went into msconfig and booted up the computer with no background programs running except for systray and explorer. I popped in the CD, and I still have the debugger error

Anymore suggestions? :(

Well go delete all registry keys relating to RA2 and WW. And Final alert and Yuri. Delete everything then try it out.

If all else fails got check if the game will install on another computer. It could be the game after all....

Oh yeah another thing is that IE has a debugger. So you could go and disable that if you wanted. Don't know if it has anything to do with this in any respect. But yeah...... Just an idea.

Yeah luk3us could be onto something there. An Internet Explorer setting could be confliction with the RA2 setup routine.

I once had to change to a setting in IE so my NHL 2003 game would work properly.

Alright I'll go through the registry again.

But I have installed legal copies of Red Alert 2 on this computer before, with IE.

Alright I went through and deleted all RA2, YR, TibEd, and FinalAlert related registries. I rebooted my computer and tried installing RA2 again, but still got the debugger problem.

I was thinking, could RA1 be conflicting with it? I have a legal copy of RA1 installed on my computer, with a bunch of Westwood-related extra programs that came with it. Should I maybe try uninstalling RA1?

Uninstalling RA1 probably won't make a difference. I'm clueless as to why the game is doing this.

Now, I generally don't recommend this... but perhaps you should look into a NoCD patch which removes the copy protection of the game. Chances are, this error will be gone too (as it's an anti-piracy measure). Note that talking about NoCD patches and stuff like that is forbidden on these forums.

But remember, I am getting the error while trying to install the game, I haven't even gotten it onto my hard drive yet.

If its causing you so must trouble... Then take it back to where you got it and ask them to get it to work. If it don't then they should get you another copy that DOES work. If they don't come at night and burn the place to the ground....

lmao

The thing is, I bought it from some guy online (used), I don't think he'll want it back...

I'll keep trying some things though.

Yeah that would work if you have proof of purchase.

Also strat1 said he got it second hand.

It is legit. He didn't provide me with a manual and box (grrr, I wanted that manual :) ), but I have the 2 CD's in almost perfect condition along with the original jewel case.
