C&C Gold crashing on XP

Recommended Posts

I've patched my copy of Command & Conquer Gold with both the 1.05 patch and stealth tank effect patch but the game crashes randomly on any missions. Usually it happens after a few minutes. The odd thing is it only happens on this computer.

I think I've narrowed it down to the amount of money on the computer, the computer with 2 GB of RAM crashes but the computer with 768 MB of RAM works just fine. Is it possible that there is an issue with addressing memory or something because the programmers didn't expect so much RAM to be on the system?

I kinda doubt that. Pretty much sll crashes in C&C are related to trying to write outside its own memory.

What error message do you get, and is it exactly the same every time?

It never gives me an error, even if I use alt-tab to try and see if there is one. The video just freezes and shortly after the sound cuts out.

That's the only thing I've been able to come up with, although the computer it's crashing on has a Dual Core 2 but that shouldn't be the problem (I use a program called ForceCore to set the process affinity when it starts). It works just fine on the computer with less ram so I don't get it :(

I have the same issue. It works on a laptop perfectly but crashes/freezes randomly on pc where the only big diffrence is the dualcore.

Any help? Maybe something like a debugger I could run to find out what the error is or something?

If you have a dual core CPU, start the game and press CTRL ALT DEL (For XP Pro select Task Manager!),

right click on the games .exe program, click set affinity, deselect one CPU.

... (I use a program called ForceCore to set the process affinity when it starts).

That's not the problem because the game is already running on one cpu, task manager confirms this.

ETA: ForceCore can be found here if there is any doubt about what it does.

I see... Then I really don't have a clue

The fact the audio stops FIRST is a very odd detail though. Usualy the audio keeps playing on a bit after the game crashes.

Then it could be something with the audio driver or sound card? might be too new.

The audio freaks out when I play doom95 for some reason.

But it's still wierd cus that shouldn't make the game crash,

Huh? I didn't say the audio stops first, the video does and the sound keeps going for a bit or they both stop at the same time.

ahh sorry, I misread that... thought it said " The video just freezes shortly after the sound cuts out." Didn't see the "and" in between -_-
