Dead Computer

Recommended Posts

I was playing RA3 today when suddenly my computer shut down. The monitor and printer still had power and were functional, but the tower would not turn back on. It also seemed to have power as a blue light in the power button was still lit, which usually identifies it as being on, which it obviously was not because the all the internal fans, the mouse, and the keyboard were all shut down.

After attempting to start it up was met with failure, I tried unplugging it to see what would happen, not much other than the blue light didn't turn back on when it was plugged back in.

After an examination of the innards, all the wiring and circuitry appeared fine (and not abnormally hot).

I bought it new December 2007.

I am not so skilled with hardware issues and since I can't turn it on at all, I can't check anything else.

If anyone has any idea what might have happened or how it might be remedied, do tell.

If it shut down like that but other peripherals still had power, it's likely the PSU fried or your CPU is overheating.

Overheating was the first thing I guessed when I saw that it wasn't turning back on, but like I said, nothing was hot.

Ah well, I'll have it looked at on Tuesday unless it starts working again, but its not showing any sign of behaving anytime soon.

That sucks, but was pretty much what I had a feeling of.

Can't run RA3 on any of my other computers, so no RA3 for me until it's fixed...

Back to RA2 modding, my eternal fallback entertainment.

It was the power supply... wasn't rated to support the draw from my new graphics card, so kablooey.

Don't matter too much though, would've needed a new one anyway.

My dad installed it, and conveniently didn't think to check despite the fact that he is an electrician by trade and has studied electronics as well. So, his fault.
