Cold War Crisis Interview at GamesModding.com

Recommended Posts

The recently relaunched GamesModding.com has posted and interview with Skleni, who is part of the Cold War Crisis mod team. Cold War Crisis is a total conversion mod for C&C Generals. This interview covers a range of topics. Of particular interest is the part where he talks about some the special programs they have developed. Here's a sample.

GamesModding.com: Would you like to tell us more about these tools?

Skleni: When modding C&C Generals, most of the time you edit text files and there are things that are really boring but need to be done quite often. That can simply be sorting all the entries in a file alphabetically or removing unused entries and so on. So I’ve written some programs that take care of things like that. Another, more advanced tool reads values from an excel file and updates them in the configuration files. That was necessary because these values are connected to each other, meaning that if you edit one, another 50 need change as well.

The most important program I've written for CWC is another one though: the starter. Originally the idea was to have a program that moves some files to enable the mod instead of installing them directly. That way CWC doesn’t mess up your original game, and when you're finished, the starter cleans up everything again. Later on more features were added, updates can be downloaded automatically for example, so that players always have the newest version.
