March 5, 2010, 9:44 am - Valve - Press Release

Valve, creators of best-selling game franchises (such as Left 4 Dead, Counter-Strike and Half-Life) and leading technologies (such as Steam and Source), today announced Portal 2 for shipment this coming holiday season.

Portal 2 is the sequel to 2007's Portal, which won 70 industry achievement awards.

Portal was so short because it was a trial...We paired it with [Half Life] Episode 2 and Team Fortress 2, which were recognizable and safe. Then we had this portal thing, and we had no idea if people would dig it, even though we thought it was a cool idea. So we put it out there safely in the Orange Box, and the results came back wilder than we could have ever imagined.

Their results of this trial were phenomenal, but with their sequel in the works, what changes will Valve have to keep the next installment relevant and refreshing?

The original Portal was streamlined, linear, and straightforward. But, this made the ground-breaking 3 hour experience feel much like a tech demo, even though that's what it was meant to be. Lombardi admits the fact that Portal was meant to be a trial, saying that "Portal was a test bed. Portal 2 is a game."

Today's Game Informer cover unveiling is just the latest in a year and a half's worth of Portal 2 news that has been steadily leaking about the Valve game since 2008.

The cover hints at a chance to leave the labs, and GLaDOS, behind, but we've known plenty more than that for quite awhile. Be warned, if you proceed through our Insider's Guide to Portal 2 surprises, plot-lines, characters will be SPOILED.

So apparently this has co-op, an actual story, adventures in and outside of the lab, and a paint mode that lets you interact with your environment, so paint it one colour to move fast, and another colour to jump high. The game is a stand-alone, and full priced.

I'd loved the original, hope lightning can strike twice.

Dukkha (Sanskrit दुःख) according to grammatical tradition derived from dus-kha "uneasy", but according to Monier-Williams more likely a Prakritized form of dus-stha "unsteady, disquieted"

Hmmm. So this is how Valve wraps up Left 4 Dead 1 & 2 with their DLC content to be released soon, and now a new development of Portal 2?? Where's Half-Life 2 Episode Three? Perhaps this should be the time to call in Half-Life 3 already. All the games with the "3" have been released: Halo 3, RA3, C&C3, UT3, Warcraft 3, GTA 3, COD 3, and the upcoming Deus Ex 3 and Max Payne 3.

If Activision owned Valve and asked for a development deadline of their games and if they go slow steam without pressuring, they would be more susceptible to being FIRED!!! Just like what happened to Infinity Ward.

Portal 2 still needs some original HL2 content files even though it's stand alone, just like Cstrike Source, and Left 4 Dead 1 & 2.
