Starcraft 2 = C&C rip-off?

Recommended Posts

I agree with DD here. If they had another 12 months to flesh out a better story and more time on the gameplay and overall mechanics it could have been better. When you sit down and actually play C&C 4 in skirmish or MP there are some clever elements and many things that could have been improved on. But no excuses make up for the abysmal storyline they hastily threw together

Wasn't C&C4 originally a skunkswork project that EA wanted under a big franchise? When C&C3 was released, EALA hinted at multiple expansion packs (they called Kane's Wrath the "first expansion"), Kane's Wrath after all had only a Nod campaign. Why didn't they just make the C&C4 concept an expansion pack for C&C3? It's simple "Sole Survivor"-esque gamemode would've worked better as an expans-alone than a totally new game.

I think the worst part of C&C4 is the fact that they turned a rushed game into the C&C Tiberian finale. And the total nightmare of a story doesn't help.

Wow, the people who say SC = a C&C rip-off are incredibly stupid. I read the topic on the cnc forums and I could only laugh at them, damn. Ignorant people over there.

I think it was Sam Bass who speaking in some EA podcast a few months back. He said C&C 4 was started by some Asian based EA studio who liked C&C but wanted or experimented with a different way to play, hence the crawler system. It was an internal game they played or something. Once EALA heard of it (I think) their was talk of making it available to everyone, either as a free download and for a small fee maybe but never a full release, it would have been a multiplayer game only I guess. In the end it was the EA big wigs, the bosses, the dudes who pump in the cash, who wanted more and said it had to be a full C&C game. And the only way to achieve this was call it C&C 4. Sam Bass was brought in mid way through to develop a new story around the new gameplay system. Sam Bass explained it way better than that in the podcast, but its something along these lines.

I bet it was either EA Korea, EA Japan, EA Singapore, EA China or EA India attempting this since they are EA based studio companies. Korea loved SC but I might have believed that EA Korea might have implemented that.

It's true the people who are saying it are incredibly stupid over there, but it's intellectually dishonest to not acknowledge the pattern of exchange between Westwood and Blizzard.

Also, regarding C&C4, it might have been fun as a side-play style for C&C3 much like the little C&C RISK that came with Kane's Wrath. but trying to be a full game is kinda goofy nonsense, and clearly things were cut. Sometimes I will give a game more credit because they were trying something but couldn't quite get a little piece here and there to work correctly. But in this case, I'll have to go with what I see... with the pretty important cut parts just bringing more tragedy to it, ironically making it worse in my eyes since it should and could have been so much better.
