It cometh!

But for real, Gearbox Software, just ahead of the opening of PAX 2010, announced to the world that the game-that-will-not-die is finally on the home stretch after more than a decade in development. Duke Nukem Forever, the sequel to 1996’s Duke Nukem 3D has been “close to release” countless times since it was originally announced in 1997. Since then, DNF has spawned a string of release dates that never panned out, some of the most effortless humor that’s ever existed, and a fierce legal battle between publisher Take-Two and original-developer 3D Realms.

After hitting financial trouble in 2009, 3D Realms closed its doors and entered legal proceedings with Take-Two over the game they should have delivered more than ten years earlier. Though we still don’t know the exact details, we know now that Gearbox got involved shortly thereafter, taking over development of Duke Nukem Forever in late ‘09; presumably after a settlement was reached between 3D Realms and Take-Two.

With over a decade worth of assets to work from, Gearbox was able to make short work of things; showing off a playable demo today at PAX. Described as being in the ‘polishing’ phase, Duke Nukem Forever, featuring both single and multiplayer modes, is slated for release sometime in the next year on PC, PS3, and Xbox 360. CEO Randy ‘The Man’ Pitchford said that Gearbox will announce more details concerning ‘the future of the IP’ during their panel at PAX 2010.

I was just reading about that elsewhere...

Do you know how you can tell that a game is going to be something special? When it starts with a tutorial telling you how to piss into a urinal. That's how the demo for Duke Nukem Forever starts, and it really doesn't get much more highbrow than that.

Gearbox Software is possibly insane for taking on this project, a game which has twelve years of expectations and notoriety behind it. However, the studio has risen to the challenge and created a game that feels so incredibly Duke that you have to respect it no matter what. This is Duke Nukem at his puerile finest, and just from the demo, I was laughing out loud. It's not even that it's particularly witty. The humor is just so incredibly stupid that it starts to take on the illusion of brilliance, and that's what matters....

I have a feeling it will be a horrible game anyway.

I get that feeling too, but who knows, it may surprise me.

Gearbox?! WHAT ABOUT HALF LIFE OPPOSING FORCE 2?!!! They should have gone for the real Half-Life 2 expansion. I wish Valve could have gone for it but then there wouldn't be a HL3 anytime soon. I wish ID Software could have gone for that too.

The only games I like to play from Gearbox is Opposing Force and Blue Shift, in which both of them are Half-Life 1 expansion packs. Right now, I think it's way too late for a Duke Nukem Forever since it looks outdated for quality. Now I want a Duke Nukem FPS RPG game instead.

Well, the quality of the game is not necessarily defined by the graphics and new innovative elements.

A kick a** gaming experience is what I think this will be. I don't think it's going to be a hit among critics however.

Well it better be liking snorting cocaine, because they're had over a decade to get it bloody right.

SC2 a similar game was ****ing awesome, so its not impossible, just unlikely.
