F15pilotX 4 Posted November 4, 2011 (edited) Just found this on Pop Sci's website - my first thought when I saw the picture was "lol, I've seen that before." http://www.popsci.com/scitech/article/2004-06/rods-god Yes I know, the ion cannon doesn't exactly fire rods. F15pilotX 4 Posted November 4, 2011 (edited) Le fixed right as you were posting. I did the calculations, and it looks like this weapon (assuming a 6.1m long, .6m diameter tungsten pole; speed of Mach 10) would have a yield of about 46 tons of TNT - about the same as a low-yield tactical nuke. Not too shabby. Edited November 4, 2011 by F15pilotX Share this post Link to post
Nmenth 291 Posted November 4, 2011 would have a yield of about 46 tons of TNT - about the same as a low-yield tactical nuke. Not too shabby. What nuclear weapons have you been detonating? The tiniest nuke ever tested was the Mk-54 with a yield over twenty times that, at its minimum potential. Those are more comparable to the FOAB, which had a yield of 44t. Share this post Link to post
F15pilotX 4 Posted November 4, 2011 (edited) The Mk-54 had a 10-20 Ton yield. The Mk-54 SADM could be anywhere from 10 T to 1 Kiloton. A later varient of the same [W54] design, the W-54, had a 250 ton yield, and the W-72 (even later) was 600 tons. Other low yield nukes: W-51, 22 Tons W-48, 78 Tons W-75, 100+ Tons Edited November 4, 2011 by F15pilotX Share this post Link to post
Nmenth 291 Posted November 4, 2011 Oh, right, I knew that. Was a little distracted when I replied. The Mk-54 was the smallest device used for the Davy Crockett recoilless nuclear rifle, but its payload could be up to a 1kt yield, which is significantly larger than the FOAB and Mk-54 warhead. F15pilotX 4 Posted November 4, 2011 Haha, how awesome would that be to fire what's basically a nuke-RPG? They need to put that in BF3/MW3 as a bonus or something. Share this post Link to post
Doctor Destiny 41 Posted November 5, 2011 Are the "Rods from God" really like an Ion Cannon? I mean... it's not quite the same. It's still awesome as **** though so don't get me wrong. Share this post Link to post
Nmenth 291 Posted November 5, 2011 It's more like the GDI Support Power, Orbital Strike, from Kane's Wrath. A step toward the Ion Cannon. Share this post Link to post

They ought to include hardened bunkers in the next C&C game + the rods of god as a hard counter imo Edited November 6, 2011 by F15pilotX Share this post Link to post
