Nmenth 291 Posted January 7, 2013 Has anyone here ever used a desktop/personal wiki? I wanted to get one, but after searching through what the internet has to offer, I am a bit disappointed. As far as I'm concerned, most of them are little more than WordPad with links. DokuWiki looks more like what I want, but unfortunately, it is not a desktop wiki. Share this post Link to post
Guest Stevie_K Posted January 9, 2013 I have a hard time seeing much use for this. I get the idea that you could write articles in your own words without anyone interfering, and map certain information, but other than that I don't see any advantages by using it. Share this post Link to post
Nmenth 291 Posted January 9, 2013 Not that my intentions for wanting it are relevant, but I have written a series of novels, currently seven books long. The plotlines cover dozens of characters, locations, organizations, etc., all of which I need to keep track of. I use a paper notebook and 21-page Word document now, but it is difficult to update and slow to reference. What better way to increase efficiency than through my own wiki? Additionally, if it works well, I also have a game series that involves towns, people, monsters, weapons, and a storyline in-depth enough that I am writing a novel for that too. It could also possibly benefit from its own wiki. Share this post Link to post
Doctor Destiny 41 Posted January 10, 2013 Install Linux on VM, install Apache, PHP and mySQL, install Wiki onto that, use localhost, done. Share this post Link to post
Nmenth 291 Posted January 10, 2013 Now if only I knew how to do all of that... Share this post Link to post
Doctor Destiny 41 Posted January 11, 2013 It's actually pretty simple. There's instructions for doing all of those things everywhere. Share this post Link to post
