Shadow Warrior free on Steam

Recommended Posts

True room over room situations where you can have beams running over a room and be above, below, or stand on the beam. Ledges, true bridges and more are all possible, adding to the realism of the environment.

Same we hear nowadays :)

Never heard of this game - worth playing?

Hmm, looks like a Doom esque shooter.

You never heard of Shadow Warrior? I thought it was widely known...

Anyway, it was 3D Realms' second Build engine game after Duke Nukem 3D, and attempted to repeat its success with an Asian theme and a ninja main character.

Personally I prefer Duke3D, but Shadow Warrior is still quite a nice game, so give it a try.

If you don't have a Steam account, you can get the shareware version (a four-level episode) either from 3D Realms or from RGB Classic Games.

I seldom hear or read any new or old game from Steam (except for the ones that are fully MP) that is free-to-play or freeware.

Well, the developer who are currently working on a remake of Shadow Warrior intended a limited giveaway initially but when some wiseguys circumvented their security and acquired all 50,000 keys intended for the promotion, they just decided to make the game free for everyone.

This morning we launched a promotion on Facebook where fans of Shadow Warrior could like the new Facebook page and receive a Steam key for Shadow Warrior Classic (1997), the original version of the game, for free. As luck would have it some folks were able to sidestep some of the security and download the Steam keys we had set aside for this promotion - all 50,000 of them. Whoops.

So what to do? The idea was to let fans of the original game and folks that had not tried it before have a chance to download it for free and get involved in the community for the reimagined Shadow Warrior that our friends at Flying Wild Hog are developing for release later this year. Now we just had a lot of disappointed fans that wanted to get the game but the promotional app was, for lack of a better term, empty and there were no more keys at the ready to reload it. And if we did, wouldnt they just get zapped again? With some of the original keys, that were meant to be free, already being sold online we had to do something.

Well, we made the decision to go ahead and make the game free to play for anyone on Steam. Originally, the team thought wed just make it for a limited time (as the Facebook feed clearly illustrates) but then we realized why not just let it be free forever. There were never plans to charge for this base version of the original game so why not let everyone have a go at it.

The sad thing about that is those guys probably think themselves heroic for their deed. They even tried to sell the free keys...

Maybe it was all a well-calculated scheme to make sure the game would end up being released for free?
