Red Alert 2 poor performance

Recommended Posts

I recently dug out my old copy of red alert 2 for my AMD 64 3200, 1gb ram, radeon 9800 pro, running windows xp home. Whilst everything works fine on the whole, ra2 can get very choppy during frantic scenes (e.g. nuke explosion, exploding bridge etc.) when you'd assume it would run smoohly on my rig. Also, in game movies often freeze the game for up to 5 seconds before they play (or just as they begin).

I read on another forum that the movie problem (and perhaps the choppiness) is probably either a winxp problem or newer makes of ram (pci 3200 I think)and yet was fixed by patch 1.005, then reappeared with patch 1.006! Still, as hard as I search I can't find 1.005 anywhere (and it would probably cause any mods I want to use to stop woking, not to mention screw up multiplayer).

I've tried using compatibily modes, switching off visual themes etc. and none of it works.

Does anyone know a fix, or at least where patch 1.005 can be found?

Thanks in advance.

I find that when playing TibSun gamepl;ays pauses every now and again. That's while the drives spin up and cache some data - could be something sililar with your system?

You could be right; everytime it happens I can hear the dvd drive spinning furiously. The same thing happens with a fully-patched Starcraft+Brood War when movies play in the interface (although I don't recall getting the slowdown in SC)

Perhaps it's a problem with hardware combinations, then.

I am having the same problem.

I have athlon 64 3200, 1GB pc3200, Geforce fx 5600

It seems like it is running the game to fast.

I have noticed that some of the audio will cue up before the other has even stopped playing.

I think that the proc is choking the graphics card with to much information to fast.

Although Yuri's revenge plays absolutely fine, and if I scroll away from all of the action before a cut-scene plays it won't freeze on me, but there are those times when a cut-scene is at the end of the level and you can't sroll away even if you want to.

I am still having problems with it, has anyone found a solution yet?
