Main Site Improvements

Recommended Posts

Since launching the new look site back on the 11th of December I've taken all the feedback on board and reworked some of the design. Plus we have been able to fix some of the little bugs. I will list all the changes we made based your feedback....

  • No one liked the large slider images so they have been reduced and moved to just above the news posts on the main site. The new slider, just like the first one will cycle through each feature slider image, you can navigate them using the left and right arrows that will appear when you hover over the slider or you can use the black dots below it.
  • With the help of our good friend @neogrant, we also fixed the minor problem with way our images show inside the lighbox effect. The mobile navigation menus will no longer appear when you close a lightbox viewed image.
  • Everyone wanted the button to access the Forums on the main navigation, so that was re-introduced. It did mean moving the Site Info links to the secondary menu at the top of the page though.
  • And as previously announced, on the 19th of December, the Downloads section was restored.

If you spot something that is broken, could be better or you simply have something to say in regards to the site design please reply here. I read and take note of it all.

Say, Sonic, what about the forum changes? Is there a restriction amount of embedded links?

Edit: I have fixed the issues from my free-to-play list of games thread earlier.

I'm still getting lag when opening the frontpage. In the other thread you asked me for more info:

I'm using Chrome Version 31.0.1650.63 m

The browser tab is unresponsive

Scrolling speed is unresponsive

Tell me if you need more info.

I've checked, there is no restriction to the amount of embedded links, there is however, a 100kb limit on the size of each post. While there is now way for any to tell how big the post is in terms of file size, I've bumped the limit up to 500kb.

When you are posting a lot of links is the forum giving you an error message saying there are to many?

I'm still getting lag when opening the frontpage. In the other thread you asked me for more info:

I have tested the site in the latest versions of Firefox, Chrome and IE and I'm unable to reproduce what you have described, I don't get any lag, or unresponsive behaviour. Testing was done on two different computers (my desktop and laptop). My only guess right now would be maybe you have some sort of extension installed in Chrome that causes a problem. You could also try clearing your browsers cache.

Have you tried another browser to see if you get the same results when opening the site?

The whole site & forum is incredibly slow to load for me, my ISP is Telecom NZ.

What your describing there G Daddy happens to me from time to time. I'm also on Telecom NZ. Its probably ISP/DNS related, not our site or server.

I'm experiencing it all the time, but I don't recall having this problem before the relaunch (not this bad at least, anyway).

I can't see how us changing the site design will affect the loading time of the site and the forums as well for you. As I said in other posts in this topic, there is nothing for me to test if I can't reproduce wants reported to me. For the record, here's my trace report, similar to what you posted.....

I always get a couple of time outs on the global-gateway.net.nz hops.

Try these links, they are sites on the same server as us...

Are they slow for you?

No, they are all fine. I've tested with multiple browsers too.

I just opened an incognito window in Chrome and loaded the CNCNZ main page, which took 3 minutes to complete.

I just did the exact same thing on 2 computers, it only took about 6 seconds for the site load. So I have no idea what's causing problems for you.

Someone on GP who is on Telecom and in the same IP range as me is experiencing the problem too, so it must be ISP related.

This thread here right? http://www.gpforums.co.nz/threads/474868-With-Telecom-Can-t-Access-Voobly-com?p=10104879

You will have to bitch to Telecom about it I guess, there is nothing we can do about it. Judging by your posts in that GP thread your in the 122.58.xxx.xxx IP range. I'm not, I have a static IP in the 125.236.xxx.xxx range. A few years back I was getting all sorts of connection problems to various sites. It was fixed when Telecom moved me to a static IP. They are free for people on some of the higher Telecom plans. So perhaps this is something you could ask about.

Or it could be as simple as something like flushing your DNS cache http://www.isitdownrightnow.com/how-to/flush-dns-cache-in-windows.html

Yeah that thread.

I wonder if Telecom are putting users on static IPs by default now, because my IP hasn't changed in a long time, rebooting my modem won't change it anymore (neither will leaving it off for a while).

Flushing was one of the first things I tried.
