Gben 20 Posted July 17, 2014 I am thinking about my home router which is probably old, and might be simply be struggling with the number of wireless devices trying to connect at the same time, which it probably just was not designed for. Which was probably the real reason I was chasing up this information in the previous thread. What advice can you give me for upgrading my adsl modem / wifi router to suit ~10 wireless devices trying to connect at the same time at home? Stability is probably more important than speed if that makes a difference in your advice - and cost is a high consideration. Share this post Link to post
Doctor Destiny 41 Posted July 19, 2014 Just get one that has a relatively high network speed and good QoS controls. With that many devices, you'll almost always see slow down since that's a lot of outbound traffic. Share this post Link to post
Sonic 295 Posted July 19, 2014 What brand and model router do you have now? A firmware update can improve them in some cases. But if it particularly old, say the 5-7 year window, it could due for a replacement. Only to take advantage of better WiFi speeds, security and broadband like VDSL. What advice can you give me for upgrading my adsl modem / wifi router to suit ~10 wireless devices trying to connect at the same time at home? Are all 10 devices active all of the time? They can't all be accessing the network/internet connection simultaneously can they? I have 14 device connect to my network, without any problems. But most of the time there are only 2 or 3 devices that are active and actually using the internet connection. Stability is probably more important than speed if that makes a difference in your advice - and cost is a high consideration. I've heard the DrayTrek range of routers are popular and many people who have them say great things about them. The are in the NZ$250 price range though. Have a look at various makes and models here http://www.draytek.com.au/products.php?type=broadband Share this post Link to post
Luk3us 63 Posted July 21, 2014 I don't know your situation but if you have ten devices you should really look into just wiring them up. Network cables aren't very expensive and neither are switches. Share this post Link to post

Gben 20 Posted July 22, 2014 I'll have to check the firmware, I don't know why I didn't think of that. I'm sure it's just old though. I must have deleted the part of the original post that lists the 10 devices. 3x smartphones, 3x ipads, 2x ipods, 3x laptops... the usual culprits.... and 3 gaming consoles (these are wired). So in most cases - wiring them up is not a viable option Luk3us. My experience is that after as few days I need to hard-reset the router to get internet access... so I assume it's just struggling with the number of devices trying to connect. As you imagine they are not all trying to connect at the same time all the time... so perhaps it's a particular combination that is causing me grief. Share this post Link to post
Doctor Destiny 41 Posted July 23, 2014 If the connection drops and you have to reset it, it's probably on its way out. Mine was doing that and it was going bad. Time to spring for a new one. Share this post Link to post
