As to the question above, which CPU would you prefer: more speed or more cores?

IMO, speed matters since most apps on the PC then and now rely to run on a single core. More cores would work well under multitasking, running multiple programs and running virtual OSs (ie. Linux, Mac, Android, other Windows OSs).

Depends. If I'm gaming then I'm using an i5 for the clock speed...if I'm multi-tasking / doing media stuff then I'd go i7 for all the cores.

...so speed, any day. :P

Probably speed. There just seem to be too many programs that can't exploit all those cores properly.

However, the only tasks I do that are really CPU-intensive are video rendering and DVD ripping, and that utilises pretty much the entire CPU.

It really depends on what I need it to do. If it's a server, more cores is going to be more beneficial. If it's just your average general use computer, more speed. If it's gaming, you need speed and cores. There's no blanket preference that works for all cases.
