I gotta ask...

The story doesn't look good...

Good stuff: good graphics, great gameplay (for me)

Bad stuff: VERY LONG installation time (8 cds!), can bog down on some pcs

Ask C&C King. I think he's a big fan...

I played it, and it is basically a Generals clone. Very much a Generals clone, except not as good. The view is fixed I believe, as opposed to rotating, the viewpoint makes it hard to see when moving around structures, and there are a number of bugs such as garrisoning buildings and using helicopters. And even aside from those issues the game lacks fun and character.

You mean you've played the demo. Firstly this is better than Generals, it has a storyline firstly. And although it has a typical Generals feeling, the gameplay is better, and it is much more enjoyable than Generals. All the technology is believable and the missions are easily accessable. OK I agree it may not be the best RTS of the modern day, but with an average score of 88% in reviews, and an average community score of 9.3 out of 10.... it's a sure Generals beater in my eyes.

The camera is far from fixed. It is totally rotatable, and there are ways to free roam the camera, but its not worth explaining here.

DVD version is better, but with a huge 6GB installation, do you hardly expect it to be short??? It will also only bog down PC's if the graphics card isn't good enough and will not handle vertex shading....

Below is the link to my original Act of War thread on these forums... it's gone on quite a few pages and will give you more of an idea

I have to say its an amazing game, and believe me it doesn't feel Generals, its a bit more realistic, has a classic C&C quality story, and is more similar to DoW then Generals.

The infantry in it are amazing, and I don't just mean the models, infantry in AoW have a completely differentvalue then they do in any other previous RTS, first of all they are very can be killed very easily by tank cannons, second they miraculously feel more powerful in AoW then any other RTS because..., third they can ambush from trees/bushes which gives them a X2 weapon bonus, fourth they can go prone enabling a short range stealth mode and fifth they are used to storm garrisoned civ buildings.

There is a lovely balance between vehicle and infantry worth, you can't get away with using just one of them against a good player, infantry, if used properly, can pose a considerable threat to vehicles.

oh and don't worry, AoW does not use squads.

So the problems are only in the demo version? Still if the purpose of it were to make me want to buy the game then it had failed.

Firstly this is better than Generals, it has a storyline firstly.

I see this complaint leveled at Generals all the time. Why is it such a problem for it not having a storyline? Do sports games have storylines? Or Unreal Tournament? Black Hawk Down had no real storyline, does that mean Hexen is a better game?

Where are these scores from? The magazines I read place it in the 40's-60's range.

We say Generals sucks because it lacks a storyline, compare it to other C&C games. To me EA built an engine (the SAGE engine) then made a multiplayer game to go with it and tacked on few rubbish missions with no storyline. And slapped the C&C logo on it to. C&C ensures sales!

I still think Generals pushed the boundries for future RTS games in the visual effects and graphics.

As for Act of War I was going to buy it until I read the reviews and people were reporting major performance issues. But that was a month or 2 ago so maybe things like have been corrected. I'll give the demo a go first.

I'm crazy about it. Got the DVD edition too. I got the info on my first post from a friend, but my video card just handles it fine (keep in mind I'm using an ATI Radeon 128 MB 9200 SE with 1 gig. of RAM.), and, with my audio component (Aiwa NSX- V50) so it sounds WAY COOL!!!!!!:clap: Man!! I'm still geeking about it!!

We have another case of 'six months earlier' syndrome I think - if it would have been released a lot earlier it would have done a lot better. I'm contemplating buying it but don't know whether its worth my precious money.

This machine I'm running now (though it plays Generals, even if a little bit slow) probably wont like putting AoW on it

Too bad, it looks cool. Maybe when I win the lottery I'll get a new PC. :D
