Taegukgi - The Best War Movie Ever made?

Recommended Posts

I have just come away from watching a DVD I bought the other day. Named Taegukgi (Brotherhood). A Korean War movie about the Korean War in 1950, told through the eyes of 2 brothers.

The story focuses upon how they got into the war, and their battle to survive. Despite being at each other's sides throughout the whole conflict, they are divided by war, yet still joined by the blood brotherhood they both share.

The story is "heart-wrenching", The battles even more realistic, and choatic than Saving Private Ryan, the acting performances on par and beyond anything Hollywood could manage. This film simply puts Saving Private Ryan to shame, and continues to blow away any other movie in it's class.

This movie shows something that Saving Private Ryan didn't. And that is the true horror of war. Many have tried to do this by showing the action. But Taegukgi, delivers this the only way with the battles and the bond of Brothers... Not a crap performance from Matt Damon who showed no emotion when told of his brothers deaths.

Go find it, go buy it, this is truly one movie that you will not regret watching. For those around the world, on the left is the European nations DVD cover, on the right is the American and International DVD cover. And one last thing, if you even dare watch it dubbed to English, you deserve to be shot... Keep it Korean and read the Subtitles ;)

I've seen that movie before King.

You are absolutly correct in saying that. I went and watched it, then a few days later I watched Saving Private Ryan.

I actually fell asleep during Saving Private Ryan.

That looks quite interesting...I recall a novel series written in the early '80's or late '70's that involved a Soviet invasion of the Pacific, with a small guerilla force waging war against the might of the Soviet Juggernaught throughout the lower half of New Zealand's North Island. I don't remember the name of the series, but I do remember a few key things:

  • The United States couldn't even lift a finger to try and help New Zealand. They were involved in fierce Air and Naval battles along with Europe and what was left of Australia (I can't remember if Australia was eventually taken or not, but I think Sydney got a nuke dropped on them).

[*]Wellington was captured, Auckland City definatly had been nuked. :( New Zealand became a Communist state virtually overnight. I think our flag's design was even changed: The Hammer and Sickle replaced the Union Jack. :( Not too sure on that one though.

[*]Out of the nine original members of the group, I got up to the point where only three of them remained. I've been told that only the main character survives, and she eventually gets captured. I don't know what happens after that though :(. I do remember that two of the character's names were Robert and Homer though.

  • Sorry for the lack of detail but if -anyone- knows of that series I'd love to know what it was called, so I can start reading it again.

Hehehe...hate to break it to ya matey but Christchurch was Carpet-bombed with alotta napalm...

Mainly because, for some odd reason, they weren't important enough to hold bases down there. I can't remember the real reason why though. Oh well.

Only reason why Auckland was nuked, as it was explained briefly in the book, was because the Reds thought that Auckland was NZ's capital city. :haha:

Far from it mate. Heh, I was a bit of a bookworm when I was little. Still am, sorta. These books were roughly for between 13-19 years. Not too shabby for a youngster, don'tcha think? :P

You haven't watched many Asian movies that are dubbed in English, have you?

exactly, watching foreign films in their normal languages is the best way to watch the movie. Once you watch them dubbed, not only is it terrible like Acerz said, you lose alot of the movie as well.

Dubbed films lose the emotion, the feelings, the drama... you cannot determine the specific tone of voice used... it basically ruins everything the character is trying to be. To watch Taegukgi dubbed would ruin the film altogether.

The art of a great and successful movie which can be appriciated is to view it as the Director intends

I've watched a couple of movies with english "voice overs" since they didn't do a very good job cause the oringal voices (in spanish) kept over powering the english...

It wasn't too bad....

I'll take your word on it though...

You'd have to... I have many Anime's in Dubbed English, they suck in comparison to the pure Japanese ones.
