My favourite is nVIDIA

Reason: Geforce FX 5950 :)

Very powerful card capable of runing anygame without a hiccup

or a frame drop it also has cool antialiasing technology called

Intelisample HCT technology and the Cinefx engine 2.0

that takes anvantage of aniostropic filtering and directx 9.0

Pixel and vertex shader 2.0

The video card marketplace changes rapidly. If you had asked me a year and a bit ago if ATi would ever be competitive with NVIDIA, I would have laughed in your face. Now my main gaming box has a Radeon 9800 Pro in it, and I think it's awesome.

I won't go into details, but I personally feel ATi's offerings at this time, and since the launch of the 9700, are superior to NVIDIA's products.

When you want to buy a new video card I don't think it's just a matter of "what's your favorite" .........

Personally I think it's more like "which card offers the best value for it's price", for me approx 9 months ago it was a 9700pro.....

But just to clarify my position: ATi has been my favourite for a while now, but if the NV40 whoops all over the R420, then I'll ditch ATi like last year's New Year's cake. I don't think I owe any company my loyalty, I'll simply buy the best product at the time for my needs.

I guess ATI is the right choice for most people but nVIDIA cards are very similar in graphics and performance but they are cheaper eg: A GeForce FX 5600 has dual 400mhz ramdacs and 11.4gbs memory bandwidth

the ATI Radeon 9600 pro has dual 350mhz ramdacs but a 15.6gbs memory bandwith so both cards disadvantages make them about equal

the radeon 9800 pro maybe makes the FX 5900 look like a snail but it still has competition in the form of FX 5950 nVIDIA is the choice for me cheaper than ati but just as powerful

I've always used NVIDIA cards. The value for dollar is what keeps me buying from the NVIDIA range.

To be honest, raw bandwith figures are not overly critical anymore. It all depends on how that bandwith is used.

For example, the Geforce4 Ti4600 has a raw memory bandwith of 10.4GB/s - which is exactly the same as the GeforceFX 5200 Ultra. The 5200 Ultra has nowhere near the performance of the Ti4600, because it lacks the former's bandwith saving techniques like compression and culling (as well as having a radically different architecture.) Hence two cards can have similar memory bandwith figures but completely different performance due to the way they actually use the available bandwith.

Given the choice between the 9600 Pro and the 5600/U I'd go with the 9600 Pro hands down. The 5600U will get slaughtered in Half-Life 2 - it'll probably be forced to run in DX8.1 instead of DX9 to get acceptable performance (as you can see from the numerous HL2 benchmarks available on the net when Valve had that open day thingy.) Some may argue that newer drivers will overcome this, but going by developer comments and the general discussion of knowledgeable people @ beyond3d.com it appears that all NV30 based cards (5200/5600/5800) are at a severe disadvantage in Pixel/Vertex Shader 2.0 operations. The NV35 based cards though (5700/5900/5950) are a step in the right direction, but still perform way worse than the equivalent ATi product in *most* DX9 benchmarks.

Furthermore, I have serious reservations over NVIDIA drivers now. They used to be the gold standard, but now they're so full of hacks and unpublished 'optimizations' (witness the UT2k3 and 3dmark debacles) that I think NVIDIA has lost the plot.

Sonic - buying a 9500 (at the price of a midrange card) and easily modding it with a BIOS flash to a 9700 Pro (with the performance of a high-end card) redefines value for dollar ;-)

That may be the case but I can't see my self doing that

I don't see myself buying a new card anytime soon either. My trusty GeForce 4 Ti4200 will have to do for awhile. I'm just hoping it will run Half-Life 2 next year.

BTW, on the subject of the poll above, I doubt anyone here will vote for either the Kyro or 3DFX based cards.

If anyone here is still using an aging Voodoo card I pity them.

yeah lol me to voodoo were good in thier time but they not made no more and flashing ur grafix card bios is dangerous u culd render it useless if it fails ATI cards are at the moment better with the directx 9 programe than nvidia cards are but i say when the new generation of geforce cards are released the drivers will be better and ATI could be facing a card that they will have a challange overcoming just like the gf4 ti 4800 that about now as fast as ATI 9600 XT

The Ti4800 isn't a DX9 GPU. If you want to play games like Halo and Half Life 2 or indeed any upcoming DX9 title at full visual quality, then the 9600 XT is a far better solution. You'll be missing out on effects with any GF4 based card.

Halo looks damn good on my GeForce 4 Ti4200 so I'm happy :)

I'm wither Shocker, I go where the performance leads me. For now, the ATI Radeon is best card you can get, but if the new offering from Nvidia retakes the throne, then I'll be back with them. Graphics cards are a fickle market.....

Oh true, you still get the DX8 path in Halo on a Ti4200, which still looks very nice. Nowadays though I live for max eyecandy + AA/AF ;)

I don't mind giving up fancy visuals for a solid frame rate
