generals: zero hour problems

Recommended Posts

Guest Fluke
Just like chickendippers I've never had problems running Generals or Zero Hour either, no crashes, no serious errors and my system is by no means top of the line.

AMD XP 1700 +

512 MB Ram

Geforce 4 Ti4200 128 MB

GameSurround MuseXL Soundcard

16x DVD Drive

24x10x40 CD Writer

Windows XP SP1

However I don't play online and I don't really play the game that often.

I will say that I'm shocked at the amount of people posting here on our forums about these horrible errors they are having. Sadly, other than the obvious stuff, I have no suggestions for possible fixes.

Are you playing against the computer AI opponents or vs humans? i'm personally talking 2 humans vs 3 hard ai.... vs humans is relatively ok.. I find it more fun and less abusive against AI. I think I played on GSA maybe twice was offended and never went back. I joined a club/clan and we play lots of games and we all became really good friends and C&C is the worst performer by a longshot. I also believe my system is very tweaked and no junk running. I wish I had some kind of program where we could trace the game and perhaps find the problem, but there aren't really any tools that are specific as such..

to everyone else who likely heeded by previous post. Way to go, my thread on EA is looking good. I don't think EA can avoid it this time, we just all got to keep posting. I thought I got banned on the forums but it turned out EA just sent me an email to say to posters in the thread that were insulting me got banned. People are sad.

I don't believe the game slowdown to be a heat issue as many insist and here is why:

I created a save game of a skirmish on Twilight Flame that was stuttering terribly (1 human vs 1 AI). I shut off the PC for the night and first thing the next morning booted the PC and loaded the save game. Instantly the game was going slow just like it was the previous night. Something in the coding of the game would appear to be the problem. It should be noted that loading this 1.02 save game under ZH 1.0 operates normally like it should with no slowdowns leading me to believe something in the 1.01 or 1.02 patches is the problem.

Also as a test I disabled virtual memory and that made no change to the slowdown of the PC leading me to believe paging out to the hard drive is not the problem.

Honestly, it doesn't matter anymore. EA don't care about this game anymore. I guess they didn't make as much money as anticipated and don't realize that if they did fix the game people would give it way more credit. It does have the potential to be the best RTS out there but too bad EA is too stupid. In my testing on a 3GHz, 1GB and ADSL computer with 9800Pro. This was the outcome between 5 people including me. All our systems range between 2GHZ - 3GHz and 512mb - 1gb ram.

1 human vs 3 hard ai (serious lag, can't play)

1 human vs 2 hard ai (laggy, some stop and go, playable hardly)

1 human vs 1 hard ai and 1 medium ai (lags lot but playable as long as you don't sit back)

2 humans vs 2 hard ai (laggy after 5mins playable but hardly)

2 humans vs 3 hard ai (hahaha, don't even bother, stop and go)

3 humans vs 3 hard ai (evern worse than above. game freezes, error messages of connectivity, version mismatch, etc)

3 humans vs 3 medium (not bad, ai lag is tolerable can play game)

3 humans vs 4 medium (still gets some lag, but not that bad)

It's clearly a problem with the HARD and BRUTAL AI. How the **** they didn't notice this problem when they were writing the game and testing is beyond me. The neglect of EA support is truely disgusting and I'll think twice from now on about EA titles. If anyone sees someone buying Generals, be a good person and let them know it lags like a mofo.

I'm done with the game, just isn't enjoyable when you can't play it the way you want yet your specifications completely blow away all the requirements...

Many of use have been trying to work this prob out.

Most are correct it is a prob with the patch!!

Best solution we have come up with having tried numerous drivers,vidcards,etc......

Was to use win2k ! I dual boot 2k/xp studder, slow game play ,all but disapears in 2k install.GL all!

understand that most of us players, havnt got time to be doing that, getting win2k.

EA games should make a fix.

no idea, but ive just installed generals to see what it is like, and ive been trying (without updates) to get it to work, then add an update on 1 of them, kindof like trial and error

but i've gotten nowhere, and what ive found, is that if you go to command generals blah blah website, there is link on homepage for latest update, and you download that, keep installing the update, run the game, if it smooth, ok, but if it same, install the patch again. lol thats what ive done. and i've gotten it to go a bit quicker, but still not fixed

just re-installed generals, all you need to do to get around this problem, is to uninstall generals completely, do a search for generals and see if there are any folders that havnt been uninstalled/deleted.

next you install both games, with internet off (i have a Cable Modem so i can switch it off) cause im a bit paranoid, but if you feel you dont need to, then dont.

making sure that inbetween uninstalling, installing generals, ZH that you do restart between them as this will help the game's settle.

without the updates my game works fine as it did the day i bought it, i might get some RAM so i can make it a bit faster, as my fav. map is 8 player maps which need a slight push really.

well, iv'esorted out my problem, dont know if it help's your's or not. frankly EA should bring out a fix.

Problem is with maps. Some maps are just piss poor. Unfortunately some of them are from EA.. open maps without the funneling type architecture work fine...

If you don't play the maps that have these problems, then you're just lucky I guess.

funny enough fluke, i only play one map, i know it's boring, but i put the money to minimum, i put the player's to maximum abilties, and max. player count (7) then i make sure they dont be something like USA, instead i put them as like air general to challenge meself

if i ever get bored, i up the number of teams, at current i got it as no teams :/ i just play the one with, 8 player's it has about 8 oil rigs, in four different places, oposite eachother, in middle is oilrig, and a tank airlift thing.

think thats it really, i need more RAM to up the PC's space, cause i notice it does go laggy (non-internet lag) and i need it so it doesnt do that so often.

other then that, scrole a few messages back, and see if you can get rid of your problem?

but if its a map.. then maybe your just pushing your pc too hard ,they dont upgrade themselves you know

i agree with fluke, on that about the maps, i play max players on any map (on hard), and the stuttering is only a problem on some maps, others are fine and i dont get any issues

actually I am running medium settings which is kinda insulting :? but this weekend I'm dropping a 2.8GHz cpu in my rig which will also up my bus speed to 533 from 400... My buddy though has 3ghz, dual channel ddr 1gb and it lags for him on these maps even in single skirmishes.. seems any map with a bridge or some sort of funnel coupled with the game code/ai will even cripple his machine. Pretty sure it's not a memory leak as he claims it's occupying some 200meg of memory on average, which is the same for me... last night we played 2 vs 3 medium on a pretty open map, not a single drop of lag... kinda sucks, I like nesting in a corner of a map without having to build a million turrets..

How slow does the game get m8.

I get a problem with scrolling the map, its quite choppy, but the game runs ok other than that, if it getting really slow (very stuttery) it could be that some of the computers units are stuck while trying to exit xwar factories, barracks etc, drop a nuke on em or whatever else and see if it speeds back up.

The problem is worse for me when the cpomp uses GLA or china infantry because of the sheer amount of units it produces.

What is funneling type architecture

one of the worse maps for the stuttering for me would have to be Mountain Fox, it basicly goes to an unplayable crawl on that map (3 AI on hard)

Yeah I have thisd problem too, never ever had it with plain old Generals.

But, with Zero Hour I play a 2-3 Human vs 4 AI (like I do with my friends in generals lag free all the time) and after 10 minutes the framerate goes to like 1 frame per second. Strangely this doesn't happen in SP at all it only happens in Multiplayer.

It is either a memory leak or shoddy code or both combined, ****ing stupid EA bastards better fix it or I am taking the game back.

Maybe it's just your computer

Or an unlucky combination of hardware, like your motherboard and video card etc....

funneling type architecture, is used for maps with bridges or archways. it also is on some maps where the terrain is is very high and low. it enables the units to under bridges, and into Crevasses etc.

that is my understanding of it
