Red Alert: A Path Beyond Updates

Recommended Posts

The Red Alert: A Path Beyond team have been busy lately, and I must say just how impressed I am with the progress they have made. The latest APB dev blog explains how Red Alert: A Path Beyond now features Shader 2.0 support, what this means is the old Renegade W3D engine is now able to produce bloom lighting effects, smoke and fog effects and more close to the level of today's modern games. There is even a return to the classic side bar from Red Alert. Want some previews? Check these out. These are all actual in game screen shots.

There is a massive amount of information to read through right here and even more screen shots.

We don't have a definite release date yet, we need to stop producing amazing features to implement, else we'll never release! :P

But 994 shouldn't be too far away, 994 will mainly consist of gameplay updates, balancing, new units, new maps etc. But if a feature is finished in time it'll go in. All these graphical enhancements probably won't be added until the patch after 994, but this could change.

I really admire the work ethic of mod teams like APB... a community of people who pool their resources, talents, and elbow grease to take a dream and put it into reality.

Surely when you look up the dictionary for the definition of 'total conversion 'apb' must be at least be listed as an example.

If only the big game companies could find the secret to harnessing this dynamic and make a profitable game...

There's a really interesting dynamic in the entertainment industry now that I've noticed. ie. that making a turkey of a movie is still pretty much assured of turning a profit for the investors because of certain level or returns - so that making a movie is business strategy not an expression of artistic vision. We seem to see that all the time in the gaming industry now too [i think this is more or less the view of Capt Grumpy]. I never played the mod, but apparently the dream progression of Desert Combat team from mod makers to paid employees didn't turn out so well. Shame really.

I like what APB/Reborn are doing... I hope they share the love around.
