FINALLY building this new PC (Old thread, check new one)

Recommended Posts

EDIT

New thread here:

http://forums.cncnz.com/viewtopic.php?t=7440

I am building a new budget system entirely from products on NewEgg.com and I want it to be decent but very cheap. I've chosen a fast single-core processor since dual-cores have only limited advantages unless you use all multi-threaded apps.

I need feedback, and I need to know if this'll run C&C3, and if so, how well?

I'll post my wishlist once I get it up.

Basically ...

Socket AM2 mobo with a socket AM2 AMD Athlon 64 4000+ @2.6ghz

(my socket AM2 version is more efficient and 200mhz faster)

PCI-Express x16 Nvidia GeForce 7600GS card w/ 512megs GDDR2

1.024 gig DDR2 800 memory (2 x 512) Dual Channel

Using integrated sound

Total price WITH 17-inch LCD monitor, 2.1 system, and monitor is $650. I am friggin proud. Days of research went into getting THE BEST I could.

Yea, thats about the same type as mine, except I was able to find a really great place a few miles away for my computer shell and RAM, and another place that sold me everything else, and they assembled it for only 30 bucks. The funny thing is that on the way from one to the other, I went by the Nvidia headquarters.

You gotta love Silicon Valley.

Also, I have 2 questions:

1. How much ram?

2. Any pics?

The PC specs is practically a basic version of my PC, It should be able to run pretty well with medium-high graphics, But if you like to spam units expect a bit of lag

Go for 2 GB of RAM and switch to a real video card like a 7600GT or higher. The GS range are good value but really can't be pushed.

Atleast go for the GT series video card, Your RAM will easily handle C&C3, DDR2-800 is the fastest RAM out at the moment, unless you go for the new DDR2-1111 which is ridiculously exspensive and not worth it until the price comes down...or when DDR3 comes along

How much is that card you're getting?

I'm guessing it would be around 120 US dollars mark but I may be wrong

1 gig of DDR 800 RAM which is supposed to be super-compatable with that athlon

Thanks for the info on the video card, I will do that.

The shell is a nice powermac ripoff.

The video card will cost me $109, but I'll upgrade it.

2 gigs is too much, maybe I'll upgrade later, but again, this is a BUDGET system, and it will be running windows XP, not Vista.

Shell is supergood value because it has a 500w power supply and is only $38.

I have a 17-inch LCD monitor with D-Sub connector

I have a SATA DVD/CD burner, should read C&C3 smoothely.

Two old IDE hard drives I saved from my dead Hewlett-packard save me needing to buy new hard drives or a new copy of Windows XP. To Hell with Vista. (for now)

I'll find a different vid card when I get home from school. Off to there for now.
