Changing "start" to "stop"

Recommended Posts

Well I just thought this was so awesome I had to share it with you guys,as you may have seen in the pic of the day thread I changed my start button to say stop (no it wasn't a paint job after the pic was taken) this will involve downloading a program called resource hacker and registry editing (just one line you can easily change back) so if you're too lazy to do either don't read this here goes:

Step 1: donwload resource hacker here (it doesn't require installation): http://www.angusj.com/resourcehacker/

Step 2: run res hacker then open "explorer.exe" in your C:WINDOWS directory do File->Save As->"explorer2.exe"

Step 3: make sure you have "explorer2.exe" open then go to string table 37 and where it says "start" put what you want it to say in the quotes there

and click "compile scripts"

Step 4: step 3 same as step 2 except go into field 38 and change the text inside the quotes to the same thing as in step 3

and click "compile scripts"

Step 5: go to start->run->regedit.exe

Step 6: go to HKLMSoftwareMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionWinlogon (don't expand the last one just click on it)

Step 7: in the panel on the right scroll down and you will see a field named shell right click on the word shell and then click modify set it to explorer2.exe or whatever you named your edited version of explorer.exe

Step 8: close regedit and open a task manager, go the Processes tab and end "explorer.exe" then go back to the Applications tab and start the task "explorer2.exe" (or whatever you named your edited version of explorer) and your taskbar should come back along with your icons with your start button saying whatever you want it to

There's a waaaay faster way to do that guide above.

Just download a hex key editor, open up the explorer.exe, and change all the START's to whatever word you want.

Then back up your original explorer, and replace it with your new one.

eh this is the way I learned it and thought it was relatively simple so thought I'd just put it up for the hell of it, and you can change the picture the start button uses too haven't figured it out yet tho...

I think it's a shell image somewhere in the DLLs but don't quote me on that.

Too late.
