Red Alert: A Path Beyond Interview

Recommended Posts

The Official C&C 3 Site features an interview with the team leader for Red Alert: A Path Beyond, James Brodeur, better known as Chronojam to the C&C/APB community.

Its a sort of introduction to Red Alert: A Path Beyond for those who haven't been following it or know nothing about it. Here's a sample.....

What fascinated you about C&C Renegade? Do you like playing in the C&C universe in an FPS gameplay mode better than the RTS genre?

When I first heard of Renegade, it was referred to as Commando and looked a lot different. Even after some of the production changes, though, it still looked awesome! Back in the Tiberian Sun days there had been rumors of being able to eventually play as one of the soldiers directly. Here it was, at last. You got to see the harvesters in action, drive a Nod Buggy around, maybe even pilot an Orca; you can't tell me that doesn't sound fun to somebody who grew up playing C&C.

It's a lot different than RTS gameplay though. Being able to suddenly drop into the middle of a game-in-progress and make a difference was something that was a great feature. It's also pretty social, you tend to see more teams playing and get to know people through their own actions rather than the actions of their little squads. Don't get me wrong though, I love real time strategy games. It depends on my mood, but obviously lately I've been doing a lot more with the first person stuff due to APB and the long wait for C&C3.

What is Red Alert: A Path Beyond? Is there a story? Why the Red Alert universe?

Red Alert: A Path Beyond is your chance to directly take part in a clash of ideologies in a what-if retelling of World War II. In our alternate timeline (as envisioned by Westwood Studios' C&C: Red Alert), Hitler never rose to power. Instead, the Soviet Empire has dreams of stretching from coast to coast across Europe and Asia. The extra years of peace following World War I have given ample opportunity for economic and technological prosperity leading up into World War II this time, and some pretty exotic technologies are harnessed by both the Soviets--and the Allied forces that oppose them.

Red Alert is really the game that got me into modding. It's only natural to stick with it, especially since there was already a lot of people covering the tiberium side of things. We got a taste of Tiberian Dawn (the original C&C) in the first person with Renegade; we wanted to let people see what it's like to be that Spy we saw in the Red Alert cutscenes, or what it's like to be driving in the column of Heavy Tanks.

And while we are on the subject, don't forget to read the latest APB Dev Blog. Its available now right here. Plenty of good things mentioned.

Teh_Overcow, what happens when you try to start the game?

Inferno, there is a rather-new server intended especially for Europeans actually.

Renz0r European gameserver

The three servers we suggest players try

Most players opt for one of the first two. APB currently ships with a rather rudimentary set of configuration and connection utilities, you can use these to save connection profiles to your favorite servers.

Thanks. It's even a dutch server, that's gotta be quick!

EDIT: I don't think the server is online yet...

The only crashes I've experienced are related to Xfire.

What's really annoying is that after you struggled with the Xfire team to include the necessary code to support the beta, which they did, the necessary code changed, so the current code doesn't work and to make things worse it actually prevents the game from being started at all.

Try changing D3D8 to D3D9 in xfire_games.ini in the "A Path Beyond" section.

Haven't played since Patch 1 came out and I was one of the unfortunate installing the patch. That combined with the wait for Patch 2, and the slowy american servers, I've waited.

Thanks for letting us know about the european servers, will definitely test 'em when patch 2 arrive!

Some good exposure on the ea site. Good interview and nice eye candy to support it!

(I originally stuggled with connection issues trying to start the game. After the first patch, i was able to connect but not able to maintain a connection for a full match.)

I wasn't able to play very much because of it, but when i did i sure enjoyed it.
