EALA RTS Internship Interview with Mastermind

Recommended Posts

More news from the Official C&C 3 Site. This time its an interview with Justin Moe, better known in the Command & Conquer community as "Mastermind". He is also the man in charge of our server that CNCNZ.com and many other sites in the Freedom and Revora networks call home. Earlier this year Mastermind spent some time with the RTS development team at EALA in Los Angeles. Here is some of the interview.

Earlier this summer, Justin Moe, known to many in the Command & Conquer community as "Mastermind", was given the opportunity of a lifetime to intern on our RTS development team here at EA Los Angeles. Justin is one of the top modders in the Command & Conquer community, which makes this internship even more profound and relevant to all C&C fans.

In our our exclusive interview with Justin, you'll learn exactly what it was like to work on our team, his impression of the culture and personality of EALA, and just what kind of craziness goes on behind-the-scenes of an RTS development team!

1. Tell us a bit about yourself, where you are from, your educational background, why you love C&C…

I'm originally from a rather small town in the middle of nowhere in Minnesota. I'm currently a senior at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, studying a variety of things. I've done computer science, management, and now media studies. My love for C&C comes from Red Alert 2. It was the game that got me back into PC gaming. RA2 was the first real RTS I played, and I was hooked almost instantly.

2. What is the epic story behind landing a coveted internship for the Command & Conquer EALA RTS team? How did you manage to go from running a fan-site and working on mods, to working here with our development team as an official intern for the summer?

I happened to find out about an event being held by EA on campus at MIT, where I met one of the university recruiters. From there, I sent her my resume, and a cover letter talking about how absolutely in love with C&C I was, and covering the other work that I did, such as modding. From there, I went through two rounds of phone interviews, first with the recruiter to try to figure out where I would fit, and then with guys on the C&C team, and the MOHA (Medal of Honor Airborne) team at EALA, to see how my skills would fit. After that, it was just a matter of waiting to see if they made an offer, and accepting it when they did.

More of this interview can be found right here.
