Christmas lights...

Recommended Posts

As I think to myself, as one of the most glorious holidays is coming up... We have a tradition around the world... (Maybe it's bigger here, donno) We shine these lights to show our festive cheer.... And yet we do this while one of the biggest energy crisis is looming.

To think, if no one lite their lights, how much energy would we save? Just something I'm thinking about cause a lot of people here now think "ZOMG CONSERVE" and yet I am blinded by their houses at night.

You don't need to be a Christian to celebrate Christmas. Singapore is a multi-racial country, we can celebrate each race's holiday.

Do you mean where people put Christmas lights up around their house? Then we don't do it. there are many houses that do though and they usually make up for the ones that don't. You can get LED lights now that are better at conserving energy.

Who the hell cares about conserving energy? LED lights are expensive as hell, and look worse. <_<

We have an assload of lights in our area this year. About twenty boxes of lights, and an even bigger assload of inflatable decorations. Conservation is for the weak.

It works out cheaper here because of the money you save in power. If you reuse them again next year you save more money again.

Our house is decorated like mad. Kinda sucks though to get home and have to fix half of it cause of the wind.

We got a tree... And a few lights... That's for the house, but you can't imagine what my classroom looks like... Heck, I might even post a pic of my classroom... But to satisfy curious minds, imagine a festival of many colors, 2 pairs of Christmas lights, and a lot of confetti hanging on the ceiling... You get the drift.

Here in NZ we don't really do the whole decorate the outside of the house thing, but as Luk3us said its getting more common every year. Last year was the first time I've ever hung lights around the deck roof area, did it again just yesterday. Haven't put the Christmas tree up yet though.

As for the power Christmas lights consume. Well the lights I put up yesterday has a tiny power supply that outputs about 24V (for 260 individual lights), that's not much electricity be used really. And its not light they are on all day.

Oh, you should come here at the Philippines. Imagine 7 year-old kids packing sparklers or 5-star fireworks... At school.

I would go into a long-winded reminisce here...

Christmas season starts in November here... Often with large lanterns placed outside homes, street vendors selling Christmas decors (at the damn side walk, it's a wonder why they don't become fodder for cars), and kids caroling up to 9 pm in the evening...

At New Year's eve, noise is in order. Karaoke bars fire up at maximum volume, illegal fireworks (yes, they're banned in my city due to accident frequency) are set off, often some police track down they guy who fired it up, music blares left and right, people arre out of there homes, and I would be with my group of friends, talking, and sometimes my girl and I would be kissing...

It's a fun time, but the hangover leaves me depressed for over a week... Right now, Christmas is in full swing here, and as I type this short explanation of the madness of the Philippine holidays, a few kids are singing a Filipino rendition of "Merry Christmas" outside while I'm listening to Lucas Grabeel's take on Let It Snow...

Are you implying that Christmas is only for white people? :P We're multi-everything yet I won't celebrate Judaism's Hanukkah's or Islam's Eid. Seems weird to me since Christmas is celebrating the birth of Jesus. The other two major religion's holidays celebrate something for their own religion. I don't see why you would celebrate Jesus's birth if you don't even believe in it... Unless you like presents that much. :P

And lol... snow on Christmas in Texas... It's 75F (24C) right now in the dead of winter.
