How To Play Generals / Zero Hour In Windows 7 X64
vovanius replied to Johnnyxp64's topic in Generals / Zero Hour
After some research I found out that driver 178.24 whql is the latest compatible with Generals on GeForce 6600 on Win7. Although it's Vista driver, it installs on Win7 with no problems. And it gave me quite good game performance. Aero works, overcloking (tried Nvidia Inspector) works, temperature monitoring works. So, I think, problem solved, maybe it'll be useful for someone. Thank U all for help! -

Well, I know it's old, but Vista and 7 both have default WDDM drivers that recognize it, and, official Nvidia drivers are claimed to support it, so, it is partial incompatibility. Generals is one and only game caused an issue among all the games and apps I ever used on this PC. I'll just make partition backup and give older driver a try. If anything goes wrong, i'll restore and try something else... -

Finally I found an answer. Nvidia driver + my video card is the clue. What I did: I found and clean installed VISTA SP2. Tried Generals - and all OK!. Then I checked default Vista's video driver in device manager - it's ver.7.14.10.9687 dated 22.08.2006. Then I installed current driver. It's ver.8.17.12.8026 dated 03.08.2011. Then ran Generals again - and here it is, white terrain! Rolled back to default driver - all became normal. So, I guess, I got to find some older driver version (older then default of Win7, something between 2006 and 2009), which would handle this video card right. The vendor of the card is Inno3D. Thank U all for help! Maybe U can tell me where can I find an archive with older Nvidia drivers for Vista/7? Because official site's archive is only from now till 2010. -

I tried clean install of G:ZH on clean Win7. Without and with patches. Without and with directx_Jun2010_redist. All the same... Game starts and runs fine, except corrupted textures. And again, if I reboot and switch to WinXP, goto installation folder and start generals.exe, game running with no texture problems. -

And again - we did not make it... Maybe there is the way to replace some DX library or something... -

Well, I did as U said, but the bug remains. And one more thing - if I switch to WinXP and run game from there from the same folder (starting generals.exe), it runs normally, textures are fine. So, it is not missing files or corrupted installation problem, it's OS-dependent. Or, maybe, complex problem, caused by Win7's DX11+certain video card model... -

Do it, please UPD: I just backed up my Win7 partition, made clean install of Win7 and tried both ZH (legal, patched to 1.04) and Deserp Storm (pirated). Bug remains on clean Win7. Dunno what to do... -

ZH is legal, Desert Stom is pirated. Does not matter, IMHO. In XP both wowking good. The problem is game's engine incompatibility with something... something... in Win7 (its also legal) -

Resnstalling did not make it. Patches to latest versions applied after installation, but still the same. And yes, this bug happens on stock maps, an even on main menu background battle replay -

No, no issues in other games or applications. Its GeForce 6600 (office PC, but capable enough to run Win7). No lags, all running smooth, except wrong texturing ONLY in Generals (and Generals: ZH, and Generals: Desert Storm). I tried different settings both in Nvidia Control Panel (Let the Application Decide - Performance - Balanced - Quality) and in game (different resolutions and detail levels). Changes are applied like it should be, but ground is always white. In XP ground always look correct regardless of settings (can't reproduce the bug in XP). And, I did not use any graphics tweakers or such, just WHQL driver. -

Hi! Here is a riddle One PC, two OSes: WinXP Pro SP2 and Win7 Ultimate SP1. Both OSes have latest Nvidia drivers and directx_Jun2010_redist installed. Generals ZH running perfecly on WinXP. On Win7, game runnning normally also, except one problem: terrain textures (grass, sand etc.) appears solid white in any map. Roads and buildings look normal. I tried everything: options.ini editing, compatibility modes, re-installing DX and Nvidia drivers, even downgrading drivers to ver. 197.13 (current is 280.26) - no luck. So, what can I do? Thanks in advance!
