Red Alert 3 for PS3 Put on Hold

Recommended Posts

The future of Red Alert 3 on Sony's Playstation 3 is unknown. GameSpot reported that EA have put the Playstation 3 version of Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 into "cold storage". The PC and Xbox 360 versions remain on track for release in October this year.

An EA rep simply said, "We can confirm that the development of Red Alert 3 for PS3 has been put on hold. EA LA is focusing resources on development for PC and Xbox 360 which will ship simultaneously this autumn." No reason was given for pulling resources from the PS3 version of the game, or whether gamers could realistically expect work to be continued on it at some point in the future.

Yeah, it seems its a bit more difficult to develop games for the PS3, than for the Xbox.

Well bleh...hopefully they wont do the same thing to Tiberium.

Honestly im not really looking forward to RA3, and i own a PS3 so i guess they just saved me 60$ cause even if im not interested in it, id have to rent it just to say ive at least tried it.

That's what I feel as well. RTS on consoles don't work. I know they work hard on improve the controls, nothing they can do can compare to the mouse/keyboard on PC.

However, the other question is why are a few high profile games for the PS3 effectively getting shelved lately? See here http://www.gamespot.com/news/6192052.html.

Yeah, it seems its a bit more difficult to develop games for the PS3, than for the Xbox.

The so-called problem with the is 2 fold. Firstly the PS3 runs on a Sony developed Linux operating system, and even though the Sony dev pack is aparently quite good, it still remains notoriously difficult to code for an OS that is not 2nd nature to most developers. Secondly the Cell processor executes code differently from normal CPUs and works differently to single, dual, triple or quad core processors present in PCs and 360s. IBM have created a piece of Alien technology in effect, and well that explains that one. The combination of both is therefore a nightmare in every sense.

The independant games retailer in my town goes to gaming conferences and has links in the industry. He claims that Microsoft often pay serious amounts of money to developers and the media to discredit the PS3 and delay multi-format titles on the PS3 and if enough is paid, deal Sony a blow and have the game shelved. In the case of Rockstar and GTA4, there was actually an issue with the 360 version which caused the delay from October to late April... however money under the table meant that Microsoft managed to force the blame on Sony's console instead.

But then again, he's probably saying that because Sony and Nintendo pays good amounts of cash to have their 3rd gen and handheld consoles in his shop. Whereas he finds Microsoft unwilling to provide support to his business. Not surprisingly he doesn't hold great ties to EA either... but that's because they want to kill the 2nd hand games market like Konami tried a few years ago.

EA might still be feeling the burn from their poorly-planned decision to throw in so much support for the PS3 early on. As the game industry on average grew the past few years, EA took some seriously hard hits. Their complete abandonment of the Wii in favor of the PS3 backfired to an incredible degree. Couple that with the difficulty of development for PS3 versus a Windows PC-like environment, and it's easy to see why it might not be a huge priority. It looks like RA3 was already under dev for a while, confirming rumors that there were multiple C&C teams at work at the same time beyond just Tiberium and C&C3; this could still be aftershocks of a redistribution of platform focus.

I don't mind. I'd rather see the effort they'd use to handle the port used to polish up the "real" version. The PS3 market might just not warrant the effort right now from a business standpoint anyways.

I just don't get why they don't just put *serious* effort into just adding keyboard and mouse support to consoles as standard options and just be done with the whole issue... I believe you can have them already but it doesn't seem to be a serious or consistent deployment, and to my non hardware mind, seems to be such a minor point.

The PS3 has USB ports. I don't know if you could use a keyboard and mouse in game though.

It can be done with Call of Duty 4... I have a friend who runs a very successful PS3 CoD4 clan, and they all use keyboards and mice.... such support is already hardcoded into the PS3's operating system, so it's not a major issue to take advantage of.

rofl, that is so lame though, if you want to play COD4 like you do on PC, then PLAY IT ON THE PC FFS! :P

Though, benefits of the Xbox and PS3, is there isn't any cheating.
