Nmenth 291 Posted July 7, 2008 Hai2u. Say what, now? The only way I managed to decipher this was 'hi-to-you', however, the spelling as 'hai' has left me confused. Hai's that I know of: Japanese for yes, Chinese profanity of which I will not translate, Hai River in China, A German mini-sub in WWII, Or an alternate spelling of chai, Hebrew letters of the alphabet. Nmenth 291 Posted July 8, 2008 Ah, come on now, don't take me too seriously. Share this post Link to post
Nmenth 291 Posted July 8, 2008 Not necessarily, a lot of people don’t easily understand my sense of humor. I like to take things literally and cause people to think about what they have said in a different perspective. You can accept and laugh at it, or you can strive to be a mediocre part of society. Even when I try to look from my asian perspective (azn senses). I get nothing. :< Plus, I never heard of any chinese profanity called "Hai"...? Nmenth 291 Posted July 8, 2008 Plus, I never heard of any chinese profanity called "Hai"...? Cantonese Share this post Link to post
Louis EX 0 Posted July 9, 2008 Cantonese Well don't get those two mixed up. :X Share this post Link to post
Nmenth 291 Posted July 9, 2008 What do you mean, get them mixed up? Cantonese is a dialect of Chinese. 粵語. You must be more familiar with Mandarin. Maybe it will be more recognizable to you as 傻B. Anyway, I suppose what started this all was indeed another dialect? As I wrote, I only knew of the five uses of 'Hai' as a word, but understand, 我的中文讲得不太好. Share this post Link to post

Nmenth 291 Posted July 10, 2008 Chinese is a generic term, Cantonese is specific. Cantonese, Mandarin, Wu, and Min are all Chinese. Share this post Link to post
Louis EX 0 Posted July 10, 2008 Yes, thats correct. The most common is Mandarin. You're going to confuse people if you don't specify in your post that it is Cantonese. Cause most people refer to Chinese as Mandarin. Share this post Link to post
