i have a love hate relationship with fresh installs... gotta love that clean feeling but the annoyance of having to put everything back again... gwah... personally i'd rather just ride out with my current setup and when things mess up i fix them o.o though truth be told i should probably consider buying a new pc... mine is getting a bit dated now >.>;

... ftw. Finally decided to do a nice clean install of XP. What a difference it makes. Jesus. :P

I totally agree. During the Windows 98/ME days Windows needed to be wiped out and reinstalled every 9-12 months, Windows XP not so bad, maybe every 14-16 months.

My last Windows XP install lasted from August 2006 to July 2008, never gave me any problems up until around May/June 2008 it would take a bit longer to boot and some notification icons for things like Avast, Comodo or plugging in USB drives wouldn't appear sometimes. Never bothered me because by late July I moved on to Vista when I built my new desktop computer.

But yeah a format and clean install of Windows does your computer wonders.

Indeed. I did a fresh reinstall last week, when I got a new hard drive. Though not really that fresh, as everything is still on my old IDE which is still in there, cept for windows ofc.

A fresh install is always nice, unless you didn't realize that you would need to reformat and totally forgot like half the apps you had installed damnit linux why must you screw with the bootloader

eeeeee reformat baaaad D: do not wanna have to install everything all over again... DO NOT WANT >.<; i tend to use my computer until it pretty much dies from something bad... or i get a new one. but i've only had to do a reformat like, twice in my life. and i'm pretty sure both were on win 98's... maybe 95...

Don't be lazy. Write down what you have installed, backup your email, favorites and files and format. It doesn't take long. Hell, all of my software is just about installed and I only really lack games...

Yea, it only takes... eh, 3 hours?

I've done it every 6 months for the last two years :P

Usually it's because I've done something abusive to my PC and it fights back xD

That is why you have partitions though. :P You only format the windows drive, and leave everything else alone. :)

meh i happen to look after my pc pretty darn well o.o; and when i come across a problem i find a program which can fix it for me :3 like registry errors or unwanted startup programs etc... (as much fun as it is searching the registry for stuff and trying to delete it manually, i'd rather have a simple point and click windows like interface for getting rid of those things x3; )

My PC is in a dying state, though I always managed to keep it alive at the end.

I do the same thing but eventually, your machine will bog from numerous installs, removals, file movements and deletions. Defragging and reg cleaning only work for so long.

yah... true... but then again normally when it gets to that point i'm buying a new pc anyway cos all my hardware is dated xD i'm already contemplating buying a new compy because my current one is dated o.o;

whaaaat? i upgrade. i'm just thinking it might work out better if i went and bought a whole new compy cos i'm gonna need so many upgrades over the next couple of years xD; for starters my compy is a dual core. i bought it like, 2 weeks before quad cores came out so you can imagine how miffed i was. and i need a better video card (dispite getting a new one fairly recently. the best one i could find was a 256MB... it's a great card but really i need a 512 of the same line o.o; ) and i need more RAM... maybe a third hard drive... and of course i'm gonna need a much bigger pc case... which means i'll probably need a new motherboard XD; i mean i could get all those upgrades and it would probably be cheaper then buying a new pc... but damn yo that's a lot of time and effort ._. i'll have to look into it. ah well >.>

It's not that hard. Besides, quads aren't worth the money for gamers since you will never utilize all four cores at the same time. It's extra money and extra weight on the PSU for zero benefit. Stick with a dual.

God I love people like you... a lot of the hardware forums are filling up with noobs going "LULZ 4 CORES, IT HAS MORE, IT'S BETTER LULLZZZZ" when in reality... most games can't even utilize two.

If you're encoding movies and ****, go quad, but you're not... you won't need quad for probably a year, minimum.

hmm... kay o.o; well my theory is it would be better to have it then not right? o.O and surely if you're multi-tasking you could do with having more seperate cores? o-o; either way... i guess for now i don't need to buy one >.>;

Gamers won't 'need' quads for at least 2 to 3 years. When dual cores become the bare minimum to scrape by, then you can consider upgrading to a quad.

Multi-tasking is an illusion. The CPU only performs one task at a time at any given time, including multi-cored processors.
