Red Alert 3 Beta Patch 1.06 Announced

The sixth patch for the Red Alert 3 Beta change list has been found on EA's FTP server. The patch is aimed at fixing a few errors that 1.05 created, such as the infamous Assault Destroyer firing bug. As well as a few other bug fixes, including the rather controversial expansion change. Which will seriously change the way in which Soviet and Allied players expand.

 

The change list as is below.

  • Assault Destroyers now target correctly.
  • Allies and Soviets can no longer build structures on different elevation from the structure that's granting the buildability.
  • Engineers now correctly cannot attempt to capture structures that are in the process of being sold (previously the engineers would just be lost and the structures wouldn't be captured).
  • Fixed a bug with King Oni's laser weapon that allowed them to fire too rapidly

re: expansion change.

I've seen it used once in the few games I've played for defensive buildings up on a hill. I thought it was a clever tactic, on the level on SC using supply depots as walls. Okay maybe not *that* clever...

Anyway, this is an obvious fix there, but I'm assuming it affects the passive buildings too. I kinda understand the change, but it seems to be a serious handicap. And it sounds bad... but I've not played it enough to know.

It was a bug from the start really. Should never have been able to expand like that. But everyone is use to it now, so yeah, we'll see what happens. Good old Empire just gets better every patch... Pah.

I also wonder, since Apoc did mention the beta is about to close, will we get to play 1.06 in time? They're running out of time if the beta finally stops working. :(

Well the last day for sign-ups is today, and well, I imagine the Beta servers will be shut down once the game goes Gold. I imagine then GameSpy will convert the Beta servers over ready for the full game's online features.

That's how it's always been in C&C when it comes to traversing elevation with buildings, though. Also, regarding the beta closing, I believe that refers to the registration period to enter the beta; I believe that this week it closes to new players, and old material referenced mid-September as when you have to register by in order to participate.

It always was a good one in the original red alert... A long line of sneaky ore silos leading from your base to your opponents, only to slam down a Tesla Coil on the cliff above, causing sheer carnage and distress to your opponent.

 

I suppose they want to strengthen the need and use of expansion units. Oh well, it's been a fun tactic for the last 13 years. :P
