RA3 Worldbuilder Will Not Ship with the Game

Recommended Posts

Community Manager, APOC, has confirmed in a post on the Official C&C Forums that the Red Alert 3 version of the Worldbuilder will not be included on the Red Alert 3 game disc when it releases later this month. It will instead be made available as a standalone download, which will be around the time of the first Red Alert 3 patch.

We are not shipping Worldbuilder directly on the disc for Red Alert 3, but we are currently working on it right this very moment to have ready soon after we launch the game. It's likely we will publish RA3 Worldbuilder for download around the time we publish our first patch. I'll keep you guys posted but rest assured, this is being covered.

RA3 Worldbuilder does have some enhancements like grid functionality and other improvements, but ultimately, it is still the same professional tool we use to build maps.

We'll make sure there basic "how to's" available at the time of release of RA3 WB.

When/What was the last c&c game that shipped with a decent world builder?

Better to have a well tested and working worldbuilder than a buggy worldbuilder.

Red Alert (1996) :P

But seriously, I'm not gonna post the same old rant stating how much I dislike the app. It would be nice to have a dumbed down, yet still powerful version where anyone can get their hands dirty. Until that day happens, I won't be touching Worldbuilder, not even with somebody else's barge pole!

The Worldbuilder was discussed and demonstrated during the RA3 Community Summit in June. A lot the of the community modding guys (And HeXetic of PCNC) really laid into to the 2 dudes giving the presentation, when they opened up the floor to questions they basically wanted the Worldbuilder to made more user-friendly. The two EA guys responsible for Worldbuilder were kind of blown away by the level of knowledge the community modding guys had about the Worldbuilder. It was an uneasy moment because they both had lots to think about after their time was up.

So EA are aware how tough the Worldbuilder is to use. But I can't it see being simplified or dumbed down any time soon. It would require rewriting the entire program from the ground up.

A nice quote from the topic:

If WB for RA3 isn't out before January 2009, I will videotape myself crying in a deep dark corner.

The funny thing to say now would be: lets all get our VCRs ready .

Ahh, so that's why it's called Apoc's Community Corner :P

Thinking about it though, a rewritten worldbuilder wouldn't be a bad thing. I think if they could pile some resources into it, and get it done, the community would be grateful. Sure the community would be littered with good and bad maps, but it would lift community spirits. Plus the map sharing would be huge... They could even put a map making section on C&CTV... instead of just Command School, they could do a map school with tutorials, tips and advice from the devs... it'd keep Greg Kasavin busy :P

So much potential and opportunity being missed with this app as it is right now, and that does have to change. The community, and especially the fansites could gain so much benefit. I used to love making skirmish maps for the community 10 years ago, and some of them were downright popular. I wouldn't mind doing it again... some good quality maps could go a long way!

I'd start with my most popular map though... Rockridge Assault... a purely asymmetrical 1 v 1 map, and it took me a good few weeks or so to perfect the balance on that map... People wanted bigger so I made 2.0 bigger and into a 4 player battleground variant... I would love to make 3.0 as 2, 4 and 8 player variants... that would be damn good!
