Red Alert 3 Coming Soon to Steam

Recommended Posts

Back in June, at the Red Alert 3 Community Summit, the development team at EALA told everyone that C&C wouldn't be appearing on Steam. Six months later and guess what, Red Alert 3 will be made available on Valve's popular digital distribution service very soon. But only to gamers in North America. Many other popular EA games are making their way to Steam as well.

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. - December 18, 2008. Just in time for the holidays, Valve announced that, Spore, Spore Creepy & Cute Parts Pack, Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning, Mass Effect, Need for Speed Undercover and EA SPORTS FIFA Manager 2009 are available now to gamers in North America via Steam, a leading platform for PC games and digital content with over 15 million accounts around the world.

In the coming weeks, Mirror's Edge , Command & Conquer Red Alert 3, and Dead Space will also be added to the catalog of EA's titles available via Steam.

"EA is one of the industry's largest publishers," said Gabe Newell, co-founder and president of Valve. "The EA titles coming to Steam this holiday include some of this year's top PC titles."

"We are pleased to extend our holiday titles to gamers worldwide via Steam -- a revolutionary technology that is one of the game industry's most successful digital distribution services," said John Pleasants, President, Global Publishing & Chief Operating Officer.

Aah, glad they did something right. I just wonder will EA ever stop using Securom since we all know is a bad software which nobody likes it. I'm worried what will happen to the future of the C&C games, will they continue to use Securom? Will they use Steam to avoid the DRM PC crash & installation limit controversies once and for all? We'll just have to wait & see.

Even if Steam is an online-based program, I wish it better find a way to made it available for offline as well. Especially there are offline savvies like me, I also remember Hexetic is one as well. Counter Strike Source is a prime example which Steam should not have made their games all online only, if they do, piracy will keep on coming, just like I got a torrented version of the CS game itself to have it available offline for my comfort & pleasure without the need of getting connected.

I was a bit surprised, but I think this is good.

I'm not terribly surprised that the DRM isn't present in the Steam version, Steam has its own security stuff so I guess it relies on that.

Lets just hope that the Steam version will be updated on the same day new patches arrive.

I don't know why people make big deal over the DRM/Secrom issue anyway. Its present in RA3 but has it caused you any problems? And since patch 1.05 its a non-factor now.

Still only in North America :(

Smart move by EA though.

I don't think Valve really cares about the torrented version of Counter-Strike. Cause none of these pirates can connect to public servers. Only to private hacked servers, or just playing it offline (which is just plain boring).

Exactly - it's a practical solution to piracy.

Besides it's only like $20 anyway :P

It's not stated it's installed and stays afterwards... Oh and the fact it doesn't do what it's suppose to yet screw over paying customers. :)

Hey if no DRM is on the steam versions... i'll buy it!

And why is that?

Boring may sound right to you, true, but remember, there are still offline savvies out there and are happy the way they are.

Well. You can say the pirated version is a demo, and you have to buy the game for the online experience. I think Valve is happy with that. Better off than Spore which ended up most torrented game even with the DRM.

I have no problem with the DRM, never even noticed it. Steam on the other hand has created more than enough hassles for my previous pcs for me to ever think about installing it on this one. I would trust a hacked version of steam before i used the real one (not that i use a hacked one).

Well, it is true. Unless you play LAN, then the torrent is worth it. But like my country's internet cafes, they don't rely on Steam all the time due to the possible anti-piracy detections & the limitation of 1 account per computer which the owners hate them. They rely a lot on LAN, only the very popular games will go online instead such as Dota & WoW, nothing much. Oh yeah, that includes Starcraft 1 as well, C&C hardly go online as they classified as LAN (That's the way of my country, TBH) & the popularity isn't much compare to SC. When Starcraft 2 comes, I'm sure the LAN & connection servers will be flooded and it could take hours to recover or wait for the next turn.

As for me, I used to multiplay a lot, but after I lost a lot of time due to studies & now jobs, I can't do anything much but to go solo permanently. So I'm out of the picture.
