BioBen 3 Posted April 6, 2009 Ok so my laptop only has 3 usb ports and i'm getting fed up with switching various devices. So basically, is there anything i should be looking out for when looking for one and do you have any suggestions? Share this post Link to post

Malevolence 6 Posted April 7, 2009 I guess your question is pretty much answered. Share this post Link to post
Sonic 296 Posted April 7, 2009 I really don't like questioning how someone uses their computer. But why do you have so many devices to plug into your laptop? My HP laptop only has 3 USB ports and all I plug in is a USB hard drive or a camera sometimes. Share this post Link to post
BioBen 3 Posted April 8, 2009 One is used for my sound card (when i get my next lappy I'll get one with firewire) one for my external 500Gb hard drive And another for a mouse. Basically i use it as a desktop at home. Share this post Link to post
Inferno 22 Posted April 8, 2009 On my desktop, I have one for my phone, one for my MP3 player, one for my printer, two for my HDD, one for my keyboard and one for my mouse Share this post Link to post
Malevolence 6 Posted April 8, 2009 (edited) On my desktop, I have one for my phone, one for my MP3 player, one for my printer, two for my HDD, one for my keyboard and one for my mouse I guess this topic was about Bioben's laptop USB ports usage. Since his question has been answered, might as well convert this to a "How many USB2.0 ports did you use and what did you use it for?" thread. Currently, my desktop uses these: - Gaming Mouse - Gaming Keyboard - External Hard Disk A (Misc Storage) - External Hard Disk B (Movie/TV Show Storage) /- Optional Printer if in use /- Optional iPod/iPhone if in use/sync /- Optional Phone if in use/sync /- Optional Digital Camera if in use /- Optional Thumbdrive/Flashdrive if in use Planning to get an External Hard Disk C though. Doctor Destiny 41 Posted April 8, 2009 I have 6 USB ports on my desktop and I use one for my webcam and one for my external hard drive. However, more frequently, one is occupied with a flash drive that has my resumes on it and on occasion, my MP3 player will be plugged in to charge. And I have 4 USB ports and a Firewire on my laptop but I only really use one for the mouse. Share this post Link to post
Luk3us 63 Posted April 9, 2009 Why have so many external hard drives for? I mean unless your moving large bits of data around, its better to just get an internal one. Share this post Link to post
Malevolence 6 Posted April 9, 2009 Why have so many external hard drives for? I mean unless your moving large bits of data around, its better to just get an internal one. I tend to transfer things from one computer to another. External is the way to go. Share this post Link to post
mormreed 0 Posted April 10, 2009 Just be careful what you plug into it, things won't charge anywhere near as fast on the hub(s) as they will when plugged directly in Share this post Link to post
BioBen 3 Posted April 10, 2009 Yeah I'll probly use it withthings that don't need huge speed or have external power like mice and keyboard. Share this post Link to post
Inferno 22 Posted April 10, 2009 Why have so many external hard drives for? I mean unless your moving large bits of data around, its better to just get an internal one. Well I use it mostly for the files I don't need right away. I could have chosen an internal, but it really isn't that much faster since my EHDD uses 2 usb ports, and I might move it around. Enough reason for me Share this post Link to post
Inferno 22 Posted April 11, 2009 1 cable, splits into two usb cables = double speed Share this post Link to post
Sonic 296 Posted April 11, 2009 You sure about that. Its probably more like you have to plug the 2 USB plugs in so the drive gets enough power. This is usually case if you only have USB 1.1 on your computer. Share this post Link to post
Inferno 22 Posted April 11, 2009 No, it works on one, it's just faster on two Share this post Link to post
Fiesta 0 Posted April 13, 2009 No, it works on one, it's just faster on two How much faster? Can you tell? Not in time, in random access bursts and in consistent speed. Share this post Link to post
BioBen 3 Posted April 13, 2009 Your the inteligent one, work it out for yourself. Personally, twice as fast would make sense to me. Share this post Link to post
