Command & Conquer freezes near end of msn 6

Recommended Posts

I was identified in first grade as being slow. You never ever want to be tagged with "that label" for all your life, that early in life.:( I think x-cons get more favorable treatment. I didn't even look at it.

Heh, it's just a speedrun. Me doing the mission in 5 minutes, because there's a trick to get to the lab from the start. But speedruns are based on the ingame time counter, so it doesn't really matter how fast you are; you can always just lower the game speed if you think you need more time to make decisions ;)

(my real play time was 2.5 minutes, because I play on rather high game speed)

Actually, seeing as I found out about this trick when I was really bored and said "let's suicide all my units into the enemy base", and actually won the mission that way, I don't think it's really that important to be fast, lol.

I had 2 paragraph post all done and the spelling checked. I must of hit a wrong key, again, because I just lost the whole post.

There's 2 ways around that: one is to type the post in Notepad. The other is to just post it, and then use the [edit] button to finish/spell check it. I do that all the time.

Anyway, I did find the video you spoke of in Restate box and Video button. The music and videos work A-OK in the Covert missions. Thanks again for all of your guys help.

Agent Khuul

Well, it should show the same video you get when starting the mission from the menu. Anyway, glad I could help.

gonna go play TFD some more-will keep you all posted as events warrant ;)

Good luck with that :)

Nyerguds,

I took a look at your reference to the "speed-run" for Block Kane's Escape mission. I am on dial-up yet and video's aren't practical to download unless there Alizee music video's. (YouTube it!) She is 'HOT" and can sing & dance cool, too! In my humble opinion. I did that mission by methodically figuring out ways to attrit the Nod guys while having no losses of my own. This takes forever with a lot of saves but it works.

I like the missions where you get to build stuff and plan your campaigns to defeat the ne'er-do-wells. I grit my teeth and do the missions where they give you a few units and tell you "have at it" & "good luck" so I can get to the missions I enjoy doing.

I did a later mission on Nod side where you got to destroy a village by just "do'n it" speed-run style and I had four units left, hang'n on by a thread, when I beat it. That's the only way I could figure out how to do that mission.

As an aside about, "slow", my first son has a Masters in Accounting and my second son will attend the University this fall for his Doctorate degree in Chemical Engineering. I guess "slow" is not hereditary transferable. "chuckle-chuckle" I just have my way of get'n it done.

Again, I really appreciate all you guys help. I am on the 8th mission for the Nod side now.

Agent Khuul ;)

Hmm. I'm kind of the opposite. I prefer tactical missions without a base.

The most fun are in between though. Missions where you have a base, but where you still have one clear objective to capture/protect/destroy. Like GDI #12.

I once made one like that myself, where you have to destroy a tech center in the enemy base and pick up the crate that comes out of it. Once you destroy the tech center you get airstrikes, and you can use those to destroy a target on an island you normally can't reach, which becomes visible once you pick up the crate.

(According to the storyline of the mission, the tech center blocks communications with the airplanes, and the crate has the location of their research center :) )

well, if you want some easy missions to play in between, open the New Missions menu and play the N64 special ops. They were made for a console in which they even made some campaign missions simpler because the controls were so bad :P

(I can finish GDI N64 special ops 1 in less than 5 minutes. On normal game speed. No lie. I don't even have to destroy the Obelisk :P )

Nyerguds:

I finally got to that mission, GDI N64 Special Ops-1, which you said you did in under 5 minutes. Early in the game I was baffled at how you did it because of the multiple attacks I was getting. I fended them off quite handily. I believe in the Norman Schwartzkopf's Golden Rule of War to Win. Overwhelming force. I did beat it but it took 3 1/2 hours. I took minimal casualties and really trounced 'em. I amassed many units which probably explains the length of time to beat 'em.

Then I got to think'n about your post and how you did it quick. The following is a "spoiler" so stop reading if you want to figure it out yourself.

I noticed during the game that I would get a valid Target Cursor even over fogged-in areas and I knew on the map where the Bio-Lab was at. But with the area all fogged-in over how does one locate the Bio-Lab? I put the cursor over the Bio-Lab and then went straight down to a known landmark. I chose the tree in the Tiberium field that was squirting out Tiberium and gas. Then you move your left edge of Side Bar 7 centimeters to the right of the tree and don't disturb its position. You click on the Air Strike Icon and then position your Targeting Cursor at the tree. Then you scoot the screen to the top of the map were its all fogged-in over at. Then carefully move you target cursor to within 3/4 " from the left edge of the Side Bar and about and 1 and 1/2" down from the top edge of the map. Then click on the targeting cursor to activate the Air Strike. It took me 4 tries do'n it this way but on the last one I put the Air Strike right dead center on the Bio-Lab and blew it away.

Then I got to see the "victory lap" video again. I knew I had to post and tell you I figured our how to do it.

But you have to beat it once the normal way to do so.

Anyway it was cool to do and I enjoyed it immensely. My game worked 99.6% flawlessly. I got 4 different error messages at different times playing the GDI and Covert Missions. The error messages stated that it couldn't read the "xxxxappcompat.txt" file in the Temp folder just like the "Top-of-Screen" crash.

I dutifully did an MS error report and went back playing the game I was doing at the time. The errors did not occur again even though I did about the same action in the same place where the error originally occurred at. That is quite baffling to me. Might you have any ideas?

Anyway, I guess I bored you all with this missive so have a good day and know that all your work in keeping TFD running so damn good is ever so much appreciated.

Regards,

Agent Khuul

P.S. I saved this before I Spell Checked. Won't lose it no more, I dare say.

Haha, yeah, you figured that out. But yeah, you got to finish it normally to realize that :)

First time I finished the mission I destroyed the lab with an ion cannon, on my N64 emulator, before I extracted the missions.

The same thing is actually (almost) possible in the Covert Ops "Blackout".

The enemy has to build his base up from nothing but a CY, and you get airstrike right away. Take out the CY... no base

:D

The appcompat thing isn't important though. The important part is this:

The instruction at 00432421 referenced memory at 0963fd39.

The memory could not be read from.

I can actually look up that instruction address (in this crash, 00432421) in the C&C95.exe file, and try to figure out what goes wrong there. I know that 00432421 is the top-of-the-map crash, which is a bug in the game which is simply permanently fixed in the 1.06 patch.

So yeah, if you give me those instruction addresses, I can see what I can make of them.

Nyerguds:

Thanks for your reply and interest in my issue with the errors I have been get'n while playing Command & Conquer and the Covert Missions over the last two weeks. I have noted what to write down now when I get an error to give you the correct info to work with to maybe resolve the issue, if any. I didn't know you could actually view and work with the actual game code. That's real heavy duty and way over my head. But I imagine from the results of your work that you can handle it quite good. These errors appear to be random and non-reoccurring. I am going to start some more New Missions tonight. Probably N64-GDI Msn 2. Have a good day.

Re: Got an error message...

Nyerguds:

I got an error message while playing N64-GDI Msn 2 for you to peruse . This happened when clicking on the "Save" button after typing text into the file name slot of the file to be "saved". This has happened about three times before but it never occurred to me to write them down and report them to you. This type error is not repetitive but random, as 99% of the time I save without any difficulty. When I go back to the game and do about the same things in the same places and near the same times it will save as if nothing ever happened at all. I did send the report to Microsoft for what its worth.

Error message:

The instruction at 0045af8a referenced memory at 0000008

The memory could not be read from.

Click on OK to terminate the application (Note: which I did)

*********************************************************

MS Error Signature

AppName: c&c95.exe * * AppVer: 1.6.2.0 * * ModName: c&c95/exe

ModVer: 1.6.2.0 * * Offset: 0005af8a

*********************************************************

It also referenced the xxxxappcompat.txt file as being sent to MS but I forgot to write down the exact Path and File Name. I did notice that the Instruction Address and the Offset Address, while close, where not an exact match.

Well, I guess you can "have-at-it" now so good luck. I will post more errors if they occur. ;)

About as much as an icecube at the North Pole. :P

Well, I can't actually view the game code... the original code is not kept in the exe file when a program is created. But I can see the instructions that the computer executes to run the program, which is basically the same, except I don't have any of the names that Westwood gave to the functions of the program. So the difference is, I don't always know what I'm looking at. Most of the hacking work is identifying the game's functions :P

About the error you got... the piece of code in which that address is located is indeed used for saving games; it's part of a piece of code which CCHyper (I think) identified as Heap_Save_MouseClass. Personally I have no idea what it would need to save that's related to the mouse though, but "mouseclass" might be more than just the mouse cursor, I don't know. I'll ask CCHyper if he can tell me anything more about this.

Anyway, thanks for reporting this :)

About as much as an icecube at the North Pole. :P

Well, seeing as this is a problem in the game, there's indeed very little that Microsoft can do about that...

Hello Fellow C&C Players:

My son got me C&C the 1st Decade at Good Will for $10 as a gift. We used to play the old Westwood games on an old Widows 98 based machine and they worked pretty much flawlessly. I thought it would be neat to play them all starting from the first game and watch how the games developed over the years.

The problem is that the very first game in the series, Command & Conquer, freezes up when I move the character or a harvester moves automatically near the top of the screen toward the end of the mission. I get an Error Message and a Microsoft Error Report.

********************************************************************************

********

The Error Message states:

Command & Conquer Application Error C&C95.EXE

The instruction at 00432421 referenced memory at 0963fd39.

The memory could not be read from.

Click OK to terminate application

********************************************************************************

********

The 2nd dialog box I get is:

Error Signature C&C95.EXE

szAppName:C C95.EXE &szAppVer:0.0.0.0 (Note: just empty space between C's)

szModName:hungapp

********************************************************************************

********

The third dialog box is a Microsoft Error Report which states the file names of the errors occurrences in the Details section:

C:DOCUME~1\Owner\Locals~1\Temp\WERS53le.dir00\C&C95.EXE.MDMP

C:DOCUME~1\Owner\Locals~1\Temp\WERS53le.dir00\appcompat.txt

I tried EA tech Support but I found them pretty useless for the most part and sending me in circles for answers and proper filing protocol.

What I did do that didn't have any effect on crashing over and over again is the following:

1) I manually un-installed C&C the 1st Decade and followed EA's written instructions to the letter.

2) Before I reinstalled it I made sure everything was turned off that I could turn off.

3) I went to our County Library and downloaded a fresh copy of Patch 1.02. This took about 4 minutes compared to 4 hours on dial-up albeit I don't think my 1st patch copy was bad now.

4) I installed the entire game and the new copy of Patch 1.02 with everything turned off that I was allowed to.

5) I then restarted my computer.

6) I then turned ever thing off again and played the game up to the near the end of the sixth mission where you are to the right of the airstrip and near a SAM site. This is where it crashes at and is almost the same place as before in the 1st installation.

7) I did purge my Temp and %Temp% file folders according to EA's written instructions right off the bat. The file names would only change just slightly each time it crashed.

Here are my PC specs which were asked for in a pinned post:

CPU & speed: AMD Athlon XP 2000+, MMX, 3DNow, ~1.7GHz

Operating System: Windows XP Home Edition (5.1, Build 2600) Service Pack 3

Drive F: Model: ATAPI DVDROM 16X

If any one knows how to fix  this it would very much appreciated.

Had the same problem in Mission 13. I installed ddraw.dll, problem solve except I now play in a window that is 1/4 the size of my monitor's screen. I am still looking for a solution to the playing size of C&C95. Another solution to go to youtube and look for a solution there as well.

Just edit ddraw.ini to correspond to your monitors resolution.

first of all, vkorchnoifan, read the bloody thread, the permanent correct solution to that (installing the 1.06 patch) was already mentioned.

Secondly, just disable the windowed mode in the ini? :P
