So from what I read here http://www.moddb.com/mods/halorts, this mod has nothing to do with the old Halogen mod that Microsoft had issues with.

So how long until Microsoft come snooping around this one?

Maybe Microsoft will be smart and stay away, unless they want publicity over the failed Halo RTS they made not too long ago.

Halo Wars wasn't really a failure. Not huge sales but it did ok. I thought it was rubbish though ;)

Shhhh.... it's best not to let You-Know-Who know about this until this is released. That might give HaloRTS developers a chance to release it. After that, the mod will be hosted on countless 3rd-party sites (that can't be avoided), so You-Know-Who can't do anything about it ;)

On the serious side, this looks great!

flashknight33, that's not quite how copyrights work... otherwise EA wouldn't be producing C&C games.

Correct

Incorrect. Microsoft owns Halo, Halo Wars, and everything to do with Halo (more or less anyway). They still very much have the power to send a Cease and Desist to this mod.

Now that you are here, does the same go for EA and C&C mods? (speaking of both those based on an EA owned engine and on those not owned by EA)

I should really change my avatar, I haven't worked for EA in nearly a year. However, yes. EA has the rights to all the C&C games.

When has EA ever cared about that stuff? :P

I don't know actually.

I certainly think that they find the large amount of creative work made by the fan community quite attractive (yet not attractive enough to give a damn about making their newer games more modable).

Generally speaking, mods on the engines they own equals free publicity which is good. Mods on other people's engines is a generally grey area. Halo as a RTS came into trouble because the IP owners eventually decided to make their own game, and wanted to corner the market, even though they made it a xbox360 exclusive and the mod was pc (from memory).

I would say, generally, the only problem is if the IP owners see an impact on future/current sales to their IP.

Which is short-sighted, but reasonable commercial practise.

Other instances are, IMO, personality driven.
