Eject Slot Feed Drive?

New problem - how do i eject the (DVD) disc from a slot feed (not tray type) drive if the motherboard is not operating properly?

Do I have to dismantle?

 

It's an ADOBE CS3 installation disc - so reasonably important.

1) Power off entirely.

2) Get paper clip.

3) Straighten said paper clip.

4) Find emergency eject hole (real tiny).

5) Push the paper clip into hole.

6) ?????

7) PROFIT!

As I said, this does not have a tray and therefore does not have the little hole to eject discs (which I have done several times on my desktop in the past).

 

(I don't know what else to call the slot though - is there another term?)

Some laptop disk drives are pretty easily ejected from the laptop without dismantling the thing, then you should be able to manually turn the motor that feeds the disk with your finger.

 

If you can't do that for whatever reason, I doubt I can offer any other help, hardware is not my area of expertise.

Hmm... okay I understand. I will try later. I notice the computer is on when they do this, I wonder if I will have any problems witth disc being engaged due to power problems re motherboard.

Reading through comments at youtube, some people have had success with double sided tape... I will try that with the top side first - and reduce risk of damage.

Oh well I can't get to step one of this removal method. There is a bar across the dvd slot, I assume this is the device that prevents me putting a second disc into the drive when one is already inserted. From memory, when the laptop powers on the optical drive either puts the disc in neutral or "into" drive.

 

Unless someone has some other ideas - I might take it down to the shop where I'm looking to buy the replacement laptop from.

I gotta confess, I'm thinking about just buying another XPS dell.

heh... I figure the laptop is dead, I probably need to extract the hdd to rescue any important data on it, so I might have a crack at the opening it. Learning experience.

Of course I could try to sell the damaged thing on ebay. I'm sure the techy's can easily fix it and resell it. So maybe I shouldn't be too hasty in wrecking it...
